TSSTCorp CDDVD SH222BB not ripping cds properly

Apologies if this is the wrong sub forum.

I have the TSSTCorp CDDVD SH222BB and quite a few rips to FLAC via dbpoweramp result in a file filled with distortion and noise, yet others rip perfectly.
I've been trying to find a firmware update for the drive, but I'm stumped.
I'm running a fully updated W7x64, I7, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd system.

I've googled but only came up with flaky driver programs.

Any help appreciated.

Please do not talk about ripping since it is piracy which is illegal and against rule 4. You have been warned.
Never mind. OP has given more information to justify.

I beg your pardon... ?
I BUY my CDs.
I BUY my BD/DVDs.

I have my OWN cds ripped to FLAC on my media server.
I play my OWN BR/DVDs from the ORIGINAL disks.

There is NO pirate software in our house, and there is no illegal audio or video.

You have been warned right back.

Today the Register of Copyrights and the Librarian of Congress announced the 1201 exemptions. You may remember that the 1201 review is the triannual process where organizations, communities, and individuals request permission to circumvent Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies that prevent them from doing otherwise perfectly legal things. This time around, Public Knowledge requested an exemptionthat would allow people to rip DVDs they already own in order to transfer the movie to a device that cannot play DVDs (like a tablet).

That request was rejected. Furthermore, the Register and the Librarian explained that they were unconvinced that space shifting was fair use at all. That has huge implications well beyond people who want to watch the movies they own on DVD on their iPad.

United States Copyright Office: Ripping is Illegal - Public Knowledge

Next triannual Review in 2015.

You are right. I think in UK, the law was specifically amended recently making copying owned material for personal use permissible. (And that is what z3r010 meant when he said not (here anyway) meaning not in UK rather than here in SevenForums.)

But it should not be taken as applicable universally. The legality of it depends on the laws of the country. Mere purchasing of DVD or BD does not confer any right on the buyer to break any protection and copy the copyrighted material. The buyer only gets a license to play the media on authorised players - the way those are intended to be played.

The authorised players are the branded hardware players and software players who in turn are the only ones licensed to decrypt the protection algorithms and let you enjoy your purchase.

Ripping, copying and playing it with some other source such as HDD or memory modules is forbidden by the relevant laws unless specifically permitted as in UK .

EDIT: This applies to U.K. http://www.worldtvpc.com/blog/movie-ripping-becomes-legal-in-uk-for-individuals/

Anyway, it still won't even play on three different dvdrw drives, much less rip. Maybe it's some new anti pirate measures ?
Considering I bought it from amazon.co.uk, and they give you the.mp3 version as well (I much prefer flac), it's an oddity. Incidentally, if anyone is interested in this, the cd in question is "The Very Best Of Jackson Browne"

Is it CD Digital Audio? Is it copy protected?

Check that Remove CD Digital Audio Protection is ticked in anyDVD HD.

If it is not copy protected and your CDs won't play then those may be damaged.

Sorry to barge in again.
We don't really own content on a commercial CD/DVD/VHS, etc. but are granted a license for personal, non-commercial use or display.

As far as I know it is perfectly legal (in the US) to make a copy of any disk as a back up and personal use, meaning they don't want one selling copies. A few years ago companies making CD/DVD drive were forced to add some anti-copy software to their products which may be the case here.

Having said all that, I have to say I don't agree with any of it.

Space shifting is still personal, fair use use in my opinion, but what do I know?

The whole gist of the DRM BS is to keep people from making and selling bootleg copies of movies and music. In the effort to "protect" the greedy movie and music industries DMCA has impinged the rights of users like the OP.

Even though you prefer using FLAC, does it work with MP3 at all?

I also missed this 2pods. That would seem to say the disk IS bad? Will it play in a stand alone CD/DVD player? Some disks are made so they won't play in a PC or other device. Many recent BluRay movies is a good example.

I am more or less inclined to think that the CDs are damaged. I shall go with Britton30's good suggestion to try the CDs on a standalone player. If those don't play return it to amazon.com for a refund.

Would advise buying it from a Brick and Mortar store nearest you after checking.

EDIT: I just saw your review in amazon. The CDs play on your Blu-ray player. You returned the first set and the replacements also would not play on computer.

My suggestion to get a refund from amazon and buy it from a Brick and Mortar store after checking that it plays holds.:)

I have a Blu-ray set of the Back to The Future trilogy and they won't play on my computer. They had the option of using some sort of "Blue Violet" download for PCs with a code that has since expired.

Try playing those with anyDVD HD (21 day trial version but has all updates necessary to play even the recent BDs as per the author) running in the background. My post#12.

Even to the OP's Audio CDs, I have an exercise to be tried out - a flash idea, but that only after he reports what he intends to do.:)

I contacted rhino.com and explained the problem. They say they haven't heard of this problem before, but if I send them a scan of my receipt, they'll send replacement CDs (Hopefully after checking them on a PC !), but maybe it IS protection as the CDs play on my "real" Bluray unit.
