TSSTCorp CDDVD SH222BB not ripping cds properly

OK. That gives you sometime to experiment on the present discs. :)

While mastering the discs, either one of two types of deviations from the Redbook standards is deliberately introduced to confuse CD/DVD ROM drives to prevent extraction.

1. Multiple sessions with wrong TOC. Standalone players only recognise the first session and play true. Computer drives read all sessions and get confused.

2. Deliberately introduce what is known as Level 2 errors. It does not affect playing analog audio but does extraction.

Download and install the free version of Isobuster. IsoBuster: Recover file data from CD, DVD, BD, Hard Drive, USB, SD, Floppy, etc.

1 .Check whether your CDs show multiple sessions. Extract the tracks in the first session. Of course it will be the original HQ wave.

2. To deal with level 2 errors, the computer drive should be capable of reporting such errors to the software. ( I understand that many Plextor drives and Liteon drives were/are capable of it.) If your drive is one, during the extraction process I would presume, IsoBuster will stop and may ask you on how to deal with it. Select to "Omit" those sectors.

This is based purely on analysis and inference. No personal experience of encountering any such CD and trying the above. This may or may not work. ( I had stopped dabbling with audio and video long ago.:)) This is for you to experiment.

(Stop other programs using the CD and read the CD with ISObuster)

I have two TSST CD/DVD burners, both of them slightly older model SH222-AL. I was getting simply horrible ripping performance (less than 1.5x, lots of buzzing and clicking from the drives, and audio skipping on mp3s and burnt CD-Rs).

I switched the data cables from mobo SATA ports that were in SATA mode to SATA ports that were switched to IDE mode. Ripping speed jumped to a minimum of 10x and was up to 26x by the end of the CD, and there are no ripping errors according to ExactAudioCopy logs... and my ears.

Glad to know that you sorted out the problem changing over to IDE mode. We really went wayward looking elsewhere. Perhaps the problem description that it pertains to only these CDs mislead us.

Strictly speaking the documentation that came with the drives would have told how to connect the drives.

We are wiser now. :). Thanks for reporting.

EDIT: You may mark the thread as solved if you think you have resolved the problem. It may help others.

OvenMaster isn't the OP, 2pods is. OvenMaster is offering his experiences.

BTW, Jumanji, your previous post is a lot of confusing, Redbook, TOC, etc.

OMG! Got everything mixed up ! Thanks for waking me up :). So the thread continues. OK.

As for Red Book and TOC: The only points that matter is 1. fake multiple sessions are introduced to confuse CD/DVD ROM drives or 2. Some level2 errors are deliberately introduced.

Redbook: The one that defines CD Standards. If the CDs do not conform to the defined standards, CDROM drives go haywire. TOC: Table of Contents

I'm getting in on the tail end of this thread, I have not read all of it. I have read about using IDE for CD/DVD/BR drives while googling for info on raid setups. I saw this recommended in a couple of different articles. It's something I want to test, burn a few disc's in both modes to see the difference.

Finally received replacement discs.
The only difference I could see was that they were in a cardboard printed sleeve, rather then the insert and plastic box, but they ripped to FLAC perfectly, and played on everything.
So, definite protection on the old discs then
