i have windows 7 on my computer . and my questions is do i need a program like tune up utilities ? doesn't windows 7 do all the tune up it needs ? thanks in advance.

You'll get varied answers on this subject but you don't really need a tune-up "utility". However, there are some actions/programs that you should use to maintain your computer.

1) Delete old temporary/unused files - CCleaner - Free Download

2) Defragment your computer - Defraggler - Free Download

3) Create and use system restore and system images - Macrium Reflect - Free Download

A lot of the programs that claim to clean/tune up windows have been known to make things worst. If your computer has gotten slow, their are tutorials all over the web on how to speed your computer up. Turning off a couple services or features you would probably never notice in the first place will noticeably speed up your computer.

TuneUp Utilities 2010

TuneUp is a good suite . Whether it is needed or not depends on individual thinking . It performs a lot of tasks ... easier than the system tools to operate, and most of all, it provides a moderate range of windows customization.

It is an useful tool, no doubt ! But not sure whether it is the worth of money. A lot of freewares taken together can perform the same thing as it do .

So the final decision is on you . I use it, and I am habituated with it . So my opinion may be biased

I think Tuneup Utilities is a good tuneup program, has the largest collection of cool tuning apps embedded in one program I have ever seen. But the registry cleaner part is the most dangerous and many machines have already been killed by that registry cleaner tool on Tuneup Utilities.

However, the other tools work great, they can even help you customize your log on screen and other things in the user interface but that is until the trial ends, many of the cool features will be gone unless you purchase a license. Uninstalling Tuenup and reinstalling again will not roll back the trial either.

I don't run tune up utilities. To me, it's all-too-often just snake oil. Windows 7 runs great on it's own and seems to take care of itself.

Personally, I keep it clean and test on a virtual machine for screwing around. Thus, nothing gets too screwed up to really need cleaning.

after 15 years of compulsively tweaking various versions of windows, coupled with using windows 7 for a year, the only tweaks i use these days that i've found to be beneficial with no unwanted side-effects down the line are to be found in Desktop and Shutdown Tweaks Combined.

download, unzip and merge the reg file - job done, operating system tweaked.

CCleaner is about the only thing I would use. It has several useful features all in one. I use it to keep the registry clean, scan for temp files, and you can manage your start up apps for it. Some will tell you that a registry cleaner isn't needed, but it helps to remove entries from old drivers (before installing new), and removing bits of uninstalled apps and malware.

I used to have free and paying PC tuneup software and now I consider them as non-essential for my PC. I found that lots of tools are actually that I can do myself for instance performance tweaking is actually configuring your Performance Options in the Control Panel. I stopped using them about 2 years ago and now I'm not normally interested despite them promising the earth that it can improve my PC. Out of curiosity, just to see what has changed today since I last used them, I tested out Tuneup Utilities 2010 and I got to admit it's packed with more tools but still little difference with the promises.

The bottom line, I can do stuff without needing 3rd party software and Windows 7 can certainly look after itself. I agree that tuneup utilities are snake oils.

EDIT: I actually don't even use ccleaner or any 3rd party defragging software. I just use Windows system tools. Pretty boring I know.

Yeah...there's a zillion tweak apps and I've been thru a few but TuneUp 2010 is a great balance between useful tweaks and 'filler' tweaks (the stupidly simple ones). And you can always revert changes with a click if something doesn't go like you'd hoped. The real-time app affinity tweak helps with sluggishness on occasion too.
I'd give TuneUp an 8.5/10...but that's just my opinion.
