Tuner not available after hibernate

Hello all,
I recently installed Win7 64 bit and set up MC. I have a USB tuner (HDTV PCTV 800e), and I get "tuner not available or in use by another program" when the PC wakes up from hibernating.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I tried to edit the registry to force a hardware reset on the USB controller per technet, but it didn't work.

I have to reboot the PC to get the tuner working again, something I can't do when I'm not home and the PC wakes up to record TV.

thanks!
Bill

Your hardware (motherboard/BIOS) may not support hibernation (review this with the manufacturer's doucumentation), and/or:

Click Start Orb > type Device Manager in searchbox
· Click Device Manager in search results
· Expand Your USB Device> right-click on your device > click Properties
· Click Power Management tab
· Uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer
· Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
· Click OK
Test
You can also change the power settings and turn hibernation off/ try sleep.
Sleep and hibernation are not the same and are not supported on all hardware.

Thanks, but there is no power management tab under device properties.

I think I changed the settings in power schemes to never shut off USB devices, but I still have the issue. Not sure if that would remove the power management tab under the USB device properties... Well, probably not as my USB remote IR sensor has a power mgmt tab.

I was thinking of getting a powered USB hub, or just getting a PCIe tuner card. Was hoping to use my existing hardware tho.

Thanks again,
Bill

USB Device Power Management

Did you review:

"You can also change the power settings and turn hibernation off/ try sleep.
Sleep and hibernation are not the same and are not supported on all hardware."
?

Also, I am fairly confident that a USB Device would have it's power managed by Windows. "Your USB Device" should appear under "Sound Video and Game Controllers" (expand it and right click your device).

If you cannot find the power management tab for this USB device, I would consult the manufacturer.

The power setting for USB selective suspend is for USB hub power, and simply prevents a power down request from some CPU's to be allowed or not. Some motherboard/CPU combinations handle USB power well (when entering and exiting sleep), some do not, which is when you want Windows to manage it, but some devices also will not work properly with either, or at least are poorly designed for such.

Which Power Setting are you using in Windows? High, low, balanced?

What sleep states does your CPU support? S1, S3 etc. ?

See:

Microsoft Touts Power Management in Windows 7 -- Redmondmag.com

...and run the utility noted.

This all matters...

Thanks, I'll review that article and check out the utility.
I have S3 enabled in BIOS and am using the balanced power scheme.

I'll review my BIOS for any other USB settings. My mobo is a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3.

Thanks again,
Bill

Any lucky with this?

I recently updated my system from XP pro to w7. And when returning from hibernation I hear the standard usb unplugged/plugged-in sound. This results in any program using the usb devices before hibernation needing to be restarted in order for them to work. Very annoying.

Oddly enough it doesn't happen returning from standby. But I cannot use standby exclusively.

No luck. I need to reboot or unplug the USB tuner before it starts working again.
I've been leaving the PC on all the time, something I'm not happy doing.

What does "no luck" mean??

Bim...

Perhaps you have forgotten that we have also discussed your issue(s) in this thread:

http://www.sevenforums.com/media-center/8910-audio-video-out-sync-2.html

Please review my posts there and reply (somewhere) with:

Please document for us the steps you have taken. The statement "no luck" gives us no feedback or anything to go on.

You also have not provided the requested screenshots. I assume that is because you have your own opinion on how to fix the problem, or, just don't want to bother providing any useful feedback.

We have not ruled out a system problem with hardware. Software runs ON hardware. Most continuing software issues on PC's are due to faulty, poorly designed, or incompatible hardware. In your case you are experiencing multiple issues that in my opinion as an highly experienced hardware designer are hardware related.

If you would provide the screenshots and good feedback, perhaps we can get some things accomplished and continue. This is not just for your benefit. As this is a public forum, we can help others with the same or similar issues by documenting here the steps taken to correct the problem(s).

Tuners also not available after sleep (not just hibernate)

Thought I'd post this here as many years later, this problem still exists and it appears to be a Windows / Media Centre problem and not a hardware / driver issue.

I built my Windows 7 based Home Theater computer over two years ago and have had the 'no tuners available' after resuming from sleep problem ever since I added the 2nd tuner (can't remember which order I added them but I had both a DVB-S & a DVB-T). They always come back after a reboot/cold boot. I got round it by scheduling a task to reset the tuners when the machine resumes from sleep. Works every time as long as the reset runs before I hit the Media Centre button which is always every time now since I put an SSD in for the OS and as long as I remember to quit WMC before sleeping the machine (as the tuners can't be reset if WMC is already running).

The key points I want to make however are these:

Search the internet for 'no tuners after sleep Windows Media Centre' and you will get thousands of results from people using many different make/models of motherboard, TV card, graphics card and they all have the same problem. There's simply no way all these diverse makes/models of motherboards, BIOS', TV Cards would all have the same bug in exactly the same place.

1. I don't think it's anything to do with PCI-E link power state management as two of my tuners are PCI and not PCI-E. And it was like this before I added the USB one as well. And changing the power setting hasn't fixed it for many people.

2. It doesn't appear to be anything to do with power management setting for any of the devices as I (and many others) have tried every combination under the sun to no avail.

3. It's nothing to do with the 'backgroundscan' WMC performs either as plenty of people have disabled this (myself included) and still have the problem

4. I DO NOT THINK IT IS ANYTHING TO DO WITH TUNERS, MOTHERBOARDS, BIOS' OR DRIVERS

The reason I think 4. is the key bit is this: I have seen loads of reports across the internet from different people with the same problem and they are all using different motherboards, different tuners, different BIOS versions and different drivers/versions of drivers. The problem occurs no matter which manufacturer's hardware you use. I'm using two Hauppauge tuners (DVB-T and DVB-S) and a PCTV USB 290e Nano and I get the problem. I've seen reports from people using Black Gold (e.g. BGT-3620's) with the same problem. I've seen reports from people with TBS TV cards with the same problem. I've seen people with AnySee TV cards having the same problem? I've seen people using AMD chipset motherboards with the same problem. Ditto Intel (Core 2 Duo era, Core-i5 era), nVidia chipset boards and all manner of other peripherals, all with the same problem. What are the chances of independently developed hardware and drivers by all these different manufacturers having exactly the same bug in exactly the same place? Once is chance, twice is a co-incidence, but three is a pattern. The only common denominator is Windows & Media Centre.

The problem has to be in Windows and/or Media Centre. There can be no other explanation. And the sooner MS realise and fix this, the better for everyone.

To me, it is a big hurdle in the wider adoption of Windows Media Centre as a home entertainment hub. I know I could have recommended and sold many more Home Theatre computers if I had the confidence that my customers wouldn't face this problem. As it stands, I hesitate to recommend it as a viable product/solution for this and this reason alone.

Come on MS, this is not a hard to replicate issue. Replicate it in your labs, debug and fix the issue now and make many hundreds of thousands of existing customers (and potentially many millions more) very happy. You owe it to us for standing by you and loyally buying your otherwise good products.
