Hi,

cloning a hd is one thing.

But my issue is as follows:

If my computer crashes & i want to use a new computer, & have windows 7 installed on a functional hd, & undock the hard drive & put it in the new laptop, i get a windows fatal error, because of principal drivers not installed for the new pc in my system. & .. . I do not want to install windows 7 all life long & reinstall backups over, it'll never be as perfect as my original system, cause backups don't know what i removed from my registry or win7 system, & i will be left with many orphan files & maybe a conflict or two & more updates to perform or reinstallation of software. unfortunately win7 is not plug & play, like win98 that could be undocked easily & docked in a new computer, then the os would call the new material detection tool to install the new computers drivers. my questions are:

· is there a way to make a win7 system plug & play after having

undocked it ?

- is there a registry tweak i can try before undocking my hd,

to make sure a material detection process will be launched ?

- is there a tool that will turn win7 into a plug & play system
& reinstall drivers on the fly ?
:(

If available, SysPrep the HD on the old hardware to remove all drivers to move it to the new hardware: SysPrep to move HD to another computer.

You can also store a SysPrepped image which can be used on any new hardware in the future. This is how I do many Win7 installs.

If old hardware isn't available due to mobo failure then boot Paragon Adaptive Restore CD, point it at Win7 to prepare it to boot on new hardware.

it's a retail version, but my system has been tweaked so much, that i'm sick of having to do all the job over & over, i simply wish windows 7 was automatically plug & play, it seems that microsoft downgrades a lot as the years go by, which is sad. another ex is wlm, no message source edition, no deletion for all accounts, & forcing ppl to view attached pictures through thumbnails first, then having to double click again to launch another app in order to view the pics original size .. . another downgrade is disabling the option of unselecting align to grid for any other folders than the desktop .. . Anyways, thanks you so much gregrocker, i was very sceptic after my first attempt to undock the hd, i really thought win7 ultimate was an unbeatable monster lol )) but the famous blue screen of death returned ))

that sysrep is wonderful, but the process should be automatic.

At least i have a quick & clean solution, thanks :)

You're welcome. Let us know if you need anything else.

I would not tweak Win7 beyond normal System settings as it is already so lean, featherlight and instantaneous that intense mods/tweaking will almost always come back to bite you.
