Two issues driving me crazy in Win7.

im trying to get used to win7 but I have some issues that are just killing the OS....

1# How can I change the toolbar back to the old Win XP style? This new method is not only confusing but its a pain in the A, always forcing me 1 extra click (if there is more then 1 instance of that program) just to bring up a window.

2# For the love of god, how do I change the address bar back to the classic method? This is another BS change that causes me extra clicks for nothing... Ive hated this since day 1 of vista.

On top of those two problems driving me crazy there are lots of small things (like the control panel NOT being listed alphabetically form top to bottom, but left to right).... but right now the biggest issue IS tv out not working (I blame NVIDIA incompetence for that one, because I have similar issues on XP) and the two issues I listed.

1) I'm guessing you mean the taskbar, along with quick launch. Right click the taskbar, choose properties. There's some settings to play with here. Also, here is how to enable the quick launch like in XP or Vista:

2) How to disable "bread crumbs" in Windows Vista

..but I'd say get a little used to it how it is default in Win7 for #2. I disliked it at first when I first got Vista installed, then it grew on me. You can also click the address bar in the empty space to make it appear as classic (regular address shown instead of breadcrumbs.)

1# oops, sorry that was a typo. I use the toolbar (instead of quick launch) and it works fine in win7. i meant I want to taskbar back to normal... That being said, as I was typing this I took yet another looked and found changing the "always combine, hide labels" to "never combine" for the "taskbar buttons" options under taskbar resolved the issue for me.

2# That program does not work for me.... I closed every window, ran it once, nothing happens (no msgbox or anything) and nothing gets changed.... ive tried running it a few times.... edit: and its disturbing I need to use a third party application to get basic OS functionality.

BTW I spent a summer supporting vista (networking support). So I had a lot time to "test" this new address bar and it always drove me crazy.

I briefly tried finding a simple registry hack to do what you want for the address bar that I have seen previously, but couldn't. There is one that exists though. Saw it like last month or so.

Actually, the Breadcrumb Bar works better than a "Parent Folder" button, and save you some clicks. Take, for example, the following path:

D:\Pictures\Wallpapers\Comics\Superman

which would display in the Breadcrumb Bar as follows:

Computer>D:>Pictures>Wallpapers>Comics>Superman

Now, if I wanted to go back to "Wallpapers", I'd simply click on the word "Wallpapers". That's one click. Using a "Parent Folder" button, that would require 2 clicks.

If I wanted to see a list of folders within the "Comics" folder, I'd click the little arrow just after it. In the drop down list that appears, I can click on the folder to go to it right away.

Give the Breadcrumb Bar a chance. It takes a little getting used to, but it make your life way easier!

Why are you using Windows 7 if you hate it so much? Maybe you should just stick with XP.

Wow, these are actually one of the things that I absolutely love in 7 and speaking of address bar - Vista as well.

1) I don't see how you may need one extra click when all you need is one click (max) or even 0 clicks when all you want is to have a glimpse on a certain window/program.

2) Dzomlija have showed that the new address bar actually makes navigation much faster, allowing you to get to place/folder you want in one click. If you need to write an adress, again it takes only 1 click.


Also, you can use wonderful search bar in start menu. Press start and type c:\whatever you are looking for\ or a command or a name of a program. I dont think it can be much faster then this.

Well, you can also use keyboard shortcuts (there are plenty). As for me, I was getting into using actual interface since days of windows 95, so using only 10 keyboard shortcuts or so.

I believe the thread title is inaccurate, since there are no issues with the things mentioned.


pDyY06eQ8D, it would be useful if you can clarify what is it that you can do with the older style interface that you can't with the new one and how do you make it work faster. Then, most likely, somebody will quickly tell you how you can do the same thing in different ways in less steps.
