Two Minutes from Login to Desktop with Black or Blue Screen

How can I diagnose a boot problem between login and desktop?

It does not occur all the time, but when it does it will take a minute or two with Welcome displayed followed by either a Black or Light Blue screen with working cursor. Then the desktop appears and everything works normally.

Would the Forum suggested BSOD dumps and attachments be any help?

Thanks for the help. I'll put those two items on my list. Last night I did run chkdsk with repair options which was scheduled for the next boot and it ran for close to three hours on my 1 TB disk. Nothing was found other than a number of index entries and some changes were made to the file system.

I also removed all six Windows Updates from 5/14 and the problem seems to have disappeared. Actually, this is the second or third time I did that. After reinstalling the updates one at a time the system would be fine for several days or more but the problem eventually returned.

This time I will not reinstall the 5/14 updates for a week or more and see how it goes.

Would the Event Viewer or Boot log provide any useful information? Earlier I did find some Errors in the Event Viewer and corrected two items. Unfortunately that did not help. One error was a USB Apple Phone Charger provided by the Gigabyte Motherboard and it used a Gigabyte driver file. That application has been uninstalled via the Control Panel.

As an update, I did run sfc /scannow from Windows and no problems were detected. Hopefully that means that my protected system files are intact and that I do not need to run that scan again in Safe Mode.

ChkDsk also found no significant problems after running close to three hours. I found the ChkDsk Log in the Event Viewer after finally getting back into Windows.

So far my problem has not been seen since removing all six Windows Updates from 5/14.

I do have a few other things to track down. The Event Viewer shows an occasional NTFS error as described below.

"The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1. Event ID 55."

I'm not convinced that is a real problem but will see what I can learn.

Ok Ken now I set my updates to ask me before I download and install and it might be an idea to set yours the same way. I say this because I get those annoying updates like Bing bar / desktop whatever it is and when they are thrown up I check the list of updates and then right click the ones I don't want and click "Hide" - they rarely come back. see pic

Thanks for the tip on Windows Updates.

I do have mine set up the same way and manually install when I choose. Since my problem appears to be fixed after removing all the 5/14 Windows Updates, I will try reinstalling one at a time after a period time and see if the problem returns.

That brings up another interesting question. As I recall updates to Microsoft .Net Framework can have a delayed reaction. Isn't there a process that runs in the background for a while as multiple programs recompile with the new Framework update? I'm trying to remember the name of that process.

If that is the case then one might need to wait a while for any Framework update to really take full effect.

That I cannot tell you Ken I have no idea what length of time they take to install and start functioning one would have thought pretty well straight away but I stand to be corrected.

I found what I had remembered about the process running after Framework updates.

The process is mscorsvw.exe.

It sounds like it can run for a while before everything is updated.

Ok mate if you want a tad more out of the machine too read this it is my Bible you will see a definite difference if you don't mind losing a few of the "bling' as I call it like transparency etc
