Solved Two PC Home Network - Laptop can't view files on Desktop

Hi,

I have two systems (Win 7 Pro x64 Desktop & Win XP Pro Laptop) in a Home Network connected via cable through my DSL router; both systems connect to the internet directly through the router. I created a Workgroup and ran the Network ID wizard on both machines. Both system have the correct workgroup name and I checked the Win 7 system to ensure other systems have access without password requirement.

When I view the Network in Win 7 Windows Explorer, I see both the PCs and their shared folders. When I view My Network Places in Win XP I see the Win 7 folder I added. However, when I click on that folder to view the subfolders, I get an error indicating Win 7 folder is not accessible. You might not have permission to sue this network resource. I think I checked the permissions and they are all correct or the same as the Win XP system.

I have ensure the folders are shared, but I don't a way to get a good confirmation that the system has implemented my request.

What should I check to resolve the access to the Win 7 folders from the Win XP system?

try Installing teamviewer,on both machines. This program Is free. works very well for me.

Teamviewer works great. But, I'd still like to know what I haven't done correctly on my standard Microsoft Windows Network.

Do you have any suggestions on what to check?

Some additional information:

When I go into My Network Places on the Win XP system and click "Add a network place," I get the wizard to browse folders on the network. I can see the tree that goes from My Network Places to Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network/Workgroup/Win 7 system & Win XP system. When I expand the Win 7 system I see two folders that don't expand further: Users & my Login. If I select the Login and click "OK" the wizard completes to the "Finish" button. When I click "Finish" I get the same Windows Explorer error that my folder \\Destop\Login is not accessible.

Once I clear the error, I go back to the My Network Places page and I see the folder I was denied access as an icon under "The Internet" category. My router and Win XP folder is under the "Local Network" category.

I think that if the setup was correct, I should see the Win 7 folder under the "Local Network" category with the router and Win XP folder.

I suspect there is a setting for sharing or something on the Win 7 system that is preventing the Win XP system from accessing the Win 7 folder.

I resolved my issue.

Basically, when connecting Win 7 and Win XP systems in a Workgroup, you must set passwords on user accounts even though you can set the systems to log onto the desktops without having to enter the password.

Also, Home-group is a Win 7 feature only, so the feature is disabled for Workgroup type network.
