Trying to install the upgrade version of Win 7 64 bit Home Premium over the RC version of Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit.

The RC version was previously installed over a legal version of Vista 32 bit Ultimate (I think).

The first error I got was that I could not install a 64 bit upgrade over a 32 bit OS (the Win 7 RC).

I changed to the 32 bit disk and tried again. Now I get an error that I can't install the upgrade version of Home Premium over an installation of Win 7 RC Ultimate.

If I go to a clean install, my wife will hang me by my thumbs, attach electrical wires to sensitive parts of my body, turn on the juice and go for a long walk. I'd rather watch the Cleveland Browns play at football than be shocked by the wife, (though that's nearly a toss up).

1) Can't I install the upgrade version over win 7 RC if RC was installed over a legal copy of Vista?
2) Can't I install a lower version (home premium) over a legal higher end installation? (Ultimate)

Thanks everyone.....

When moving from 32 bit to 64 bit, you must do a clean install.

I think there are issues when downgrading from 32 bit ultimate to 32 bit home premium as well. Not positive about that and there may be a workaround?

My suggestion: protect your personal and most delicate gear and go for the clean install. Maybe lock wifey out of the house for a day or two while you reinstall applications.
