What’s New in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Ubuntu 10.04, aka Lucid Lynx, is the result of years of continuous work from the open source community and Ubuntu corporate sponsor Canonical. A new version of Ubuntu is released every 6 months, but version 10.04 is a special “long term support” (LTS) release which will be supported for an extended period on both desktops and servers. Lucid Lynx also brings us an incredible amount of changes in both the look and functionality of Ubuntu. Here is a list of the most noticeable changes and new features that you’ll find in desktop edition of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Read the full list of changes here.

Get Ubuntu 10.04 here.

Heh I love the way things like UI redesign is done by what was probably a single person's preference in deferance to their entire community... Paraphrasing: "We know everyone will hate it but this is the way it is". I guess stealing UI concepts from Apple is seen as more richeous as stealing them from Microsoft. :D (Talking about the "Window Controls" change)

Otherwise it looks nice, I'd give it a try out, but sadly none of the new distros work with our current version of VMWare due to a kernel change a couple of months ago so I'm kind of stuck on the older versions till we decide to update :(

6.5 :(

They removed some depretiated functions in 2.6.31 (I think that was the one, a couple months ago) that both VMWare and VirtualBox were mking use of. Unfortuantely at work you use what they give you :/

Though that kind of behavior is not consistant with a "stable" kernel line. I don't know exactly when but the even/odd numbering for "stable" and "unstable" has apparently been compeltely eliminated. The number of kernel and standard kernel driver ABI breakages in the entire 2.6.x run has been shocking actually.

Still no update on any distro for soundcards. I complain about this alot and it is one of my main complaints, I have an Emu-0404 PCI and it just doesn't work with linux. ALSA keeps saying it is supported but it is not.

I don't even really mind setting up the repos and video card, DVD playback, MP3 playback and all that.
I really enjoy Linux and my wife likes it as well, but if I can't do home recording it is useless to me. I know it is Creative Labs sittin on there hands but this is one reason Linux will never be a threat. As long as manufatuers take there time realeasing the driver info, no one will see it as a viable option.

On topic though, It looks great and I may download the live disc to play around with it.

After many hours spend, my EMU 0404 work fine.

In order to make it work :
- install ubuntu 10.04 (mine is 64 bits)
- go to emu0404 - Documentation Ubuntu Francophone (sorry, french doc) and copy/paste the first script in an executable file (chmod +x)
- launch the script, and when it asks the version of alsa you have, specify 1.0.23. It will install the latest version of alsa drivers, that seem to be ok with EMU 0404 (even if 1.0.15 is supposed to work fine with EMU0404). Rem: don't ask the script to apply the EMU patch.

After that and a reboot, your soundcard will be detected as :
> lspci | grep SB
Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value
> cat /proc/asound/modules
0 snd_emu10k

Hope this will help ...

It's ages now since I tried a linux distro and I found it a bit of a struggle then so I gave up.
I'm now dual booting Vista x64 and W7 HP x64 but I'm finding that I never go into Vista so all I'm doing is updating it every now and then.

However, I find having a dual boot comforting and it has saved my bacon when I made some software screw up and 7 wouldn't boot.
I was able to come onto this forum from Vista and get advice.

So. I was thinking of reformatting the partition Vista is on and putting Lucid Lynx on there instead.

Do people think this is a good idea? Will it be easy? My current Vista partition is 250GB, presumably I could shrink that?

Your thoughts would be welcome:)

I think having another OS hanging around is a great idea. Ubuntu will install quite easily, to whatever partition you choose. 250gb is more than enough space for it.

On my old computer, which had an Athlon 64 3000+ and 2GB RAM, I would use Ubuntu as my everyday OS and dual boot with XP as my secondary in case I needed to run something (prefer it over WINE). However when 7 came out, it became the other way around. I'm using Wubi to install Ubuntu rather than a proper installation because I don't want to partition my hard drive. Works great and runs exactly like the real thing.

Thanks for the input guys. At the moment I have 7 on one 1TB drive with no partitions and Vista another 1TB with three partitions- Vista 250GB, Unused space 250GB and a 500GB media store which is getting fuller all the time.
I could attempt a triple boot. Never tried that. Or lose Vista, shrink that partition and gain some more space.

PF. Wouldn't installing it as a Wubi mean that if Windows wouldn't boot neither would Ubuntu?

Thanks again, John:)

Nope. Wubi installs Ubuntu into a folder inside Windows, but runs totally separate from Windows, as if it were installed normally in its own partition. You can also uninstall it like you would a normal program from inside Windows's Add/Remove Programs. The only downside to installing Ubuntu through Wubi is that it doesn't support Hibernate, but that's about it.

If you haven't seen remastersys on sourceforge, check that out. It allows you to install Ubuntu, make modifications to it, install apps, etc...and then respin your own install ISO with all of your modifications...with our without your personal data files if you wish. So, you get your own custom installer just the way you want it.

The command to backup the system is
sudo remastersys backup filename.iso

If you just want the distro with no personal files, the command is
sudo remastersys dist filename.iso

It couldn't be easier.
