Yes, I am a Ubuntu user for desktop machines. My preference is Redhat/CentOS distributions for Servers. For me, it just seems that more stuff works out of the box with Ubuntu and hence the reason that I stick to it as a desktop.

I've got no opinion on whether one is snappier than the other. They both serve different purposes for me. But I can say, that I have never been disappointed in the performance of my Ubuntu boxes...regardless of the hardware that they run on.

Problems with Ubuntu exist without question. It's the same for anything. It depends what you are doing, what hardware you are using and what skill level you bring to the table. I think without question the 2 biggest problems with any Linux distro are #1). Wireless driver support #2). video driver support. Most other things work very well out of the box.

As far as tweaking Ubuntu...you absolutely can tweak it. You can radically change the way it works and you can disable quite a number of services and such to improve upon boot times.

+1 to what pparks said. Ive been using ubuntu since 7.04... Ive been fortunate that the only problem that I had was with my speaker switch which was fixed with a mod of my xorg.confg file.... That being said, I rarely boot into Ubuntu since coming back to MS and Windows 7.. ;)

List to pparks, I consider him the Ubuntu Guru. :p

Anyways, I never really cared for 8.10 and 9.04 because I always had a sound issue, that required me to look up a work around (Ubuntu was trying to route the sound to my headphone jacks even if it was set for my speakers).

9.10 Alpha 4 didn't cure that problem, I'll try beta later today.

The MAIN reason I even bother with linux is just to give me something to play with.

I recently loaded Fedora on an old, unused desktop. I tried Ubuntu first, but I couldn't get the graphics to render correctly. Things like the min, max, and close buttons would remain on screen after the window was closed... the PC was too old to handle the graphics demand.

I like Fedora so far. I'd like it better if I could figure out why it crashes my wireless router after 15 - 20 minutes of on-line time... but other than that, its great.

Steve, is that the extend of the error? That error is specific to a wubi install, and usually indicates that the wubildr file was not found... If you really wish to give ubuntu a try, give it a small 5-10 gb partition and install a stable release... 9.04.. ;)

Oh I know it was a WUBI related thing. Thus not caring enough to ask for help. :)

I'll wait for the final release at the end of the month to try 9.10.

I run Ubuntu 9.04 when not gaming. DirectX is still the supreme - OpenGL can't satisfy today's games/gamers (including me), and I believe it still won't for quite a while:(.
I don't think I'll dump MS completely until I can play my games and get all my drivers working in Linux.
I use Linux to regain my wonderful sanity back from the paranoia caused by a commercial environment. I don't really dislike Windows, though I bear grave enmity towards Microsoft as a company for commercially monopolizing the IT market.
The future is OSS!!!

As soon as a linux distro runs every piece of software I use on my laptop, and correctly identifies and operates each and every component of my laptop, then ONLY then will I consider putting it on my laptop for more than a simple test.

And before you ask, Yes, Vista and Seven both meet the above requirements.

Well, of course Vista and 7 work with the hardware since just about every piece of hardware is made for Windows and drivers are made available to Microsoft by the vendors to include in Windows.

I have some custom built machines in my house with certain hand selected hardware and they work right out of the box with the Linux distros which I typically use. I did have to switch a few pieces of software since most commercial apps for Windows are not available for Linux...but I've also got absolutely no need for piracy and a plethora of great free choices which are usually very small downloads and perform adequately for my needs.

To answer another part of the question: Is Ubuntu snappier that windows 7, yes. And why is that. well let see, oh yeah, it a hell of a lot smaller in size. The foot print of Ubuntu is give or take seven hundred megs, and windows 7 is oh say about 10 gigs. During normal operations Ubuntu (64) uses what, around 500 Mb of memory compared to windows 7(64) 1.2 Gig of memory. Hmmmmmmmmm, not sure but that could be a good explanation. :)

Ubuntu x64

I am having both the version Ubuntu 32/64 bit.... in this Ubuntu x64 is superior in video playback and sound reproduction than ubuntu x86. even though no can compare the video quality of HD/Bluray in Windows7 with Ubuntu. You can experience a lot of frame drops and pixelation in video playback on Ubuntu.

The multichannel output is still messy in Linux based products.

Snappier? Yes. It's smaller in size, less resource-hungry (probably even less than Win7) and isn't full of legacy code from several legacies ago.
