Wherever you live and whatever sports you follow ( I like Man Utd as do millions around the world too) how could you not be absolutely thrilled at the drama played out in the grounds of two of the teams in the UK's second tier of Football clubs -- both these teams were playing for a promotion place in England's premier league - and the tension went on right until the very last minute with BOTH sets of supporters probably more worried about what was happening at the other club over 300 KM away. !!
Hull City who had probably the easiest task were cruising to victory at 2-1 and with a penalty awarded within 90 secs of the end of the match should have finished it at 3 -1 but they MISSED - and seconds later Cardiff got a penalty to end the match at 2 -2 - throwing Hull's promotion party in jeopardy.
Watford (the other side in contention) were losing 1-0 then got an equaliser 1-1 which meant they needed a goal for themselves to get promoted instead of Hull City -- but an injury to one of their players caused the game to run 15 mins late. So the tension at Hill over 300 KM away was unbrearable for those fans while they had to wait to see if Watford would snatch promotion from under their noses. However in the dying seconds of that game Leeds scored to make the score 1 - 2 so the celebrations could begin in Hull.
What I love about the UK game - even in the lower leagues is that this sort of tension and emotion can't be manufactured - and seeing the real emotion of some of these fans who are about as far away from supporting rich clubs like Man utd / Man city / Chelsea etc but showing just as much passion for their clubs makes this such an exciting and enjoyable game.
I like US sport when I'm over there but you never quite get the same sort of relationship with Fans and their clubs - possibly due to the franchise system over there. Fans in the UK feel real affinity for their clubs which are very much part of the areas in which they are situated -- and without the fantastic support of fans from these clubs at the lower levels the top divisions would IMO become sterile too --- Perhaps the NFL in the USA should thing about Promotion and relegation -- you couldn't believe the atmosphere on the final day of the Championship season (The league just below the Premier league which still has 3 games or so more left).
