Thank you Brink!
I have a in the box new Asus RT-N12 router. That information will be of great help.
I looked and couldn't find a Tutorial for 101 router installation for two computers and one printer/scanner. I have never used a router or configured one. Beginners information i.e. (Can a router be used in Home Group and Work Group; which one is preferred.)

Will update a full list soon...am planning on upgrading my system later this summer anyways.
Page seven was unintentionally funny. If you don't have enough ports on your router, don't buy another one and disable it's expensive routing, WiFi and firewall functionality. Buy a switch instead--it's what they're designed for.

If you run out of router ports, buy a switch with enough ports for all of your computers and run one cable to the router. This will give you maximum performance and will be cheaper than buying another router.

Network Stumbler gave me all kinds of issues (first access was denied as I didn't login as Admin, then it said the Adaptor wasn't Present, then gave me some other common error) so I ended up using WiFi Locator instead to see what channels were being used locally. Nice little program.

Question, on my router, it has a Channel Width (20Mhz or 40 ... I selected 40), and then offers two channels, one the "Standard Channel" where you can select 1-11 or Auto, and then a "Width" channel that allows me to select 2 or 10 (I selected 6 from the first option).

What is the Width channel?

i would like to know if i cut mac address off at certain time on certain comp on my network, if it would cause major probs or mess with other comps on network.also, my son and daughter keep dumping their firewalls for some unknown reaon. maybe for gaming. can this mess up my network even if i have one on my own personal comp? is there a way for me to put firewall on my g wifi router so they cant bypass it?i have e3000 dual band linksys w/tomato on it, but it keeps dropping wifi. can you give pointers on setup to put firewall on it also so they cant bypass it? would it be better to hardwire them since its 2.4 and 5 ghz dual band router?

Hi, Brink, One excellent guide on router . Router is now becoming a security threat. I thought, that it was like a switch on and off device.
I have a problem , of sudden cut in internet, the routers telephone cable light would go off, and tries to blink and then after some seconds , stays on green, the next light turns red for few seconds and then connection is restored. i do not know , why this behaviour. Avast free wifi inspector found no vulnerability and i get connection most of the day, except a few times in the middle of browsing. could you thro some light on this?

If you have a compatible router I would recommend to supercharge it with a custom firmware such as dd-wrt or openwrt. These firmwares will give you more tools to control your network security.

Until today, I think tp-link archer c7 is the best one for home router as it is now bellow $100, and it is recommended by a lot of editors.
