I'm using win 7 64 bit and every time I try to eject my usb, a message show up informing me that something is still using it. I checked with task manager and find no such thing. I scanned my comp and didn't find any virus.

Even if I just plug it in and do nothing, I still got the same problem. If I just yank it out or pick the continue anyway option, the data becomes partly corrupt.

Help me please!

If you have Norton AV installed, disable/off "Removable storage scanning" and try.

As per some of the comments in the link above - make sure Windows Explorer is closed and any other file-viewers and if you have indexing on then this might cause a problem too - you can disable indexing for that drive.

;) :(

I hit this problem today - August 2014 - so apparently this is a long term problem. Actually noticed similar problems on a 10 year old laptop running Vista so this is a long term issue with Windows. I believe the answers are too complicated though. I have noticed if you start up you computer with a USB drive already plugged in then you will have problems ejecting it. If you shutdown, remove the USB connection, restart the computer, and THEN plug in the drive you should be able to mount/unmount the drive with no problem. Something in the Windows OS seems to lock the drive if it is in place when the computer starts preventing ejection.

How about setting the policy to Quick Removal for the USB device!

Thanks for the tip Mayank. I was not aware of that option. For the ignorant like me here is a good explanation:
Quickly remove USB devices without using Safe Removal - CNET

Quick Removal seems to be the default setting in my Windows 7, and in fact is (probably) the reason the Safely Remove option does not work. It is a pity the Windows 7 message doesn't tell you that. But as I understand from the article above Quick Removal is not perfect as you have to be sure the USB disk is not active or has open files before you yank it. So you have to be sure. MOST of the time I am sure. I think.

You are right......
However, you should use option of 'best performance' if you want to use flash drive for paging file or ready boost.
For normal usage quick removal works fine.
