Friends, I am having a problem in installing windows 7 premium OEM in dell n5110. Windows 8 installs well. I have also tried windows 7 ultimate but it is not working. When I boot from usb it boots successfully, it works fine till selection of language. But after that when It goes to that point where I have to select c drive, it gives an error. The message in the error is "A required CD/DVD driver is missing"

I take that the dell n5110 came Pre-installed with Windows 8.

To Downgrade to Windows 7.
Downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7
Warning you must have the uEFI/BIOS firmware setting in Step Three set.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS, enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here. You likely have a bad installer judging from the error.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of marking it Active which overcomes certain install failures.

I have checked It is no uEFI bios. I will try it. I have just downloaded the installer.

Hi Waqar

On your Dell laptop go inside the BIOS by pressing F2 on the Dell splash screen and make sure your boot order is 1) DVD drive ( optical disc ) and 2) is the SSD or HDD . Also make sure the SATA configuration is AHCI . Also if your settings are set to AHCI change it to SATA. Press F10 to save and restart . Try to install once again .

Obviously he`s booting from the disc.

If the disc works fine, then there is just some setting you are missing in the bios, on the other hand you`ve said you have installed on this machine before with the same settings, correct ?

That message is usually always the result of a bad burn done to fast.

You could get that error using a USB flash drive as well. What he could do is have the SATA drivers from the Dell's website and when he gets to the window where he wants to install Windows 7⃣ he could click on load drivers .

I stand corrected, he specifically states he`s using a usb drive, my apologies. :p

If you have a windows 7 dvd just make a copy or burn a new dvd from the iso.

Recreate the bootable USB flash drive with the windows 7 installation DVD . You could use Diskpart

diskpart
list disk
select disk n ( number of USB drive )
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=ntfs quick label=”Win7 Installation”
exit
C:\Windows\system32>g:
G:\>cd boot
G:\boot>bootsect /nt60 e:
xcopy g:\*.* e:\ /E /H /F
exit

G:\ is your DVD drive letter
E:\ is your USB drive letter

I have done this settings ion the bios. What settings I have to change from ACHI to SATA?

Friends, once again I am telling that windows 8 don't give error and installs perfectly without any issue. Then why not windows 7 installing. I am going tu university. after that I will post snaps of my bios settings. May be I have changed some thing that I don't remember. But I am sure it will be solved here even if not I will stick to windows 8. Thanks

Step 1: Connect your bootable USB flash drive to the computer. If you don’t have one, you can follow our how to install Windows 7 or Windows 8 from USB flash drive guide to create a bootable USB.

Step 2: Boot using the flash drive and begin installing Windows. When you receive “CD/DVD device drive is missing” error dialog click on Cancel button. This action should take you to the welcome screen.

Step 3: Now, remove your bootable USB flash drive and reconnect it to a different USB port. Windows installer should now detect the drive and you should be able to continue the installation.
