Unable to log in to Server 2000 machine from W7

I have a Win 2000 machine thats in "WORKGROUP". I can't connect from my new Windows 7 Professional (32bit). I can see the machine, it ask's for my username and password but I keep getting the response "login failure: unknown username or bad password" I can log in to the Win 2000 machine from an XP machine using the username and password.

I have gone into "Manage Network Passwords" and added the Win2000 machine name and username (M5\tim) as well as the password but that has made no difference.

Any suggestions?

This thread at TechNet seems to relate to your problem. It mentioned something about you need to set the password the same as the Administrator's password of the Windows 2000 system. And also you need to change the NTLM authentication level in Windows 7.

I'll bet money this is the case. It's even a test question if you try to upgrade to a MCTS.

That thread was the answer. It came down to the LM and NTLM settings in both machines.
