Unable to open folders and some files ????

A couple of days ago I noticed that Google Chrome was being a bit odd by not always opening as it should when clicked. Today things have gradually gone from bad to worse. I am now unable to open My Computer, Folders, Recycle Bin, and Text Files. Things like Photoshop, FLV files, PDF files will open. Either by clicking on them or by opening their default programmes. So will all of the Windows office files like Word or Access etc. Control Panel will also open.

Any ideas folks ????

First thing I would try is a scan with MBAM

to see if it's malicious. If that doesn't turn up anything suspicious then you could try a Restore Point, if available, that precedes the problem, or reset default file associations. But see what the scan shows first.

Edit: btw the scanner in the free version is the same as the paid. The freebie scans just fine.
