Unable to play Old CD on windows 7

Hi all,

I recently have gotten a CD to listen to from my local library. I do not have a CD player except for in my computer, but I am unable to play the CD in my computer.

There are no autoplay options when I insert the disk and each file size is 1kb according to windows, but it also says the disc was made in 1994. I'm thinking I'm having compatibility issues with this. Are there any ways I can play this on my computer?

I just want to listen to my favorite music in my free time while browsing the web. Thank you.

Hello logo mate have you tried putting the disk in and then go to Computer and click on the optical drive to see what is in there? It should by rights automatically play a CD because I don't think there should be any incompatibility issues with the recording.

It might be an idea to run these my friend
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f switch and if this does not make any improvement then just run this switch instead /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary

ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans

The CD is written in CDA format which means it does not have windows files such as mp3s. So you need to "rip" its files using a ripper, converting the files from the CD and putting them onto your computer in a windows mp3 format, then you can just click on them from there. Freerip is a free program that will do this..

Yes John but in my WMP there is an option for rip formats and the quality of the rip. I have to admit I wasn't aware of the CDA format stuff or if the CD the OP has is in that format.

yeah when he said the files were 1kb I knew they were cda files which are laid out contiguously like an LP album and do not have addressable sectors and tracks like computer files, therefore windows does not know how big they are and just reports them as 1kb even though they're larger of course. Probably should have pointed him to WMP ripping but I can never pass up the chance to promote the freeware methods...

That computer should be able play audio CDs and video DVDs just fine. Something is amiss somewhere. I'm wondering if installing free version VLC would be a great "second opinion"; it VLC works, then simply leave WMP alone for another time.

Has anyone considered the CD may be defective. If it was one that was burned by someone, a 1994 disc could be bad. There are many known cases of older CD's no longer able to play.

Seeing "1KB" files is what a standard audio CD will show with the file explorer.

Here is what one of my "valid" Audio CD's shows.

As I understand things, sizewise, cda file should be ± equal sized as equivalent wav file, '10 megs a minute' (±). Showing cda sizes as 1 KB indicates something amiss. I inserted a music cd in my (XP!!) comp & file sizes show as (3 minute song = 30 megs, 8 min song = 80 megs), etc, 'plus or minus'

What I show is for a VALID audio CD. The files would have to be "ripped" from the CD to wav files to see the approx. 10 megs per minute file size.

I have a recording studio and do a lot of Audio CD burning for clients.

Try to play the CD in a stand-alone CD player. I.e in your car ot stereo player.

It seems that the iusse is more relate to software ... on PC.
Try to use VLC , it should be work fine ...
