Unable To Right Click and Personalize gives an Unexpected Error HELP!!

Hi Everyone,

I'm in a jam at the moment and would really like some help. First off let me state.. it is 100% my fault for not reading fully before clicking...

So I noticed a cool AeroGlass theme and wanted to install it.. apparently the patch software was only suppose to work on Windows 7 Starter.. I have Windows 7 Pro 64bit..

When I right click on personlize I get an error window that says Explorer.exe at the top and Unexpected Error for the error message.

I did some searching my system for any type of helpful log for my screwup.. and I found the following log from the patcher software.. Here is the info in the log:

What I was thinking was that I could replace the DLL's that it "patched" with ones from another system. When I went to try and copy the dll's it stated that I did not have access to the system32 folder to replace the dll's then when I had taken ownership of the files and the folder it said that the files are in use.

So my question would be .. if I use Knoppix or another Live CD to get me to where the files are not in use but accessable can I simply overwite the files?

Or is there a better way to do this ? Regkey entry?

Any suggestions would be awesome.. The only issue I've faced with this is that im unable to change wallpaper/screensavers/etc.

I do not have a system restore point.. I ment to clone the drive when I purchased the PC but it was never done.. more reason then ever to do this after I fix this issue.

Please try this, then reboot your system.

1. Click Start

2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Once it completes, reboot your system, and then see if Personalize is available again.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

It sounds like you have learned your lesson and will start using restore points or images of your drive.

Do Option 2 of this tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html it will not harm any data or programs you have installed it will try to find and repair any corrupt system files that you have. You may have to do this as many as three times with a restart between each scan.

I rebooted anyways and same thing.. Still getting the error when I click on Personalize.

Any other ideas?

Out of interest, I did some research on this patcher, specifically from a malware point of view, and it seems clean:

So what this seems to say is do the in place upgrade.. so I techincally have 2 Windows 7 Pro installs .. the new one being the one where the files will be in use.. and then when that is working.. run a clean up.. delete the old windows directory?

Wouldn't that distroy anything on my C:? or would it just be working with the Windows directory on C? so you would have C:\windows.old and C:\windows ?

I could format the drive.. but I'd have to deal with family members wanting to strangle me for loss of game data etc..

You will only have one install of Windows 7 Pro, as stated at the top of that tutorial make sure you backup your important data first just in case.
The Windows.old is only a folder with your data in it still just in case the repair install did not work correctly you still have your data that you can copy over to your data folders if needed.
