Solved Unable to select sleep mode

When I go to the shutdown menu, the sleep option is blacked out. I have gone into power settings and under the multimedia settings in the advanced settings for the plan, I selected "allow computer to sleep", but the sleep option is still blacked out. I could really do with sleep mode, does anyone know how I can enable it/what is disabling it?

here is why and how to fix it

By default Windows 7 has media sharing turned on ( for xbox , ps3) ect

this pervents it from going into standby Mode

The Fix is Simple

Open control panel and goto

Power Options > change Plan settings > Advanced Power Settings

+Sleep
Allow hybrid Sleep > disabled
Allow wake timers > disable/enable try both settings

+USB
USB selective suspend > ENABLE

+When Shareing media [ This is the critical one ]

Set to allow the computer to sleep

Has sleep ever worked on this installation or is this a new install? I have experienced this on new installs when the graphics driver is set to the MS Standard VGA instead of the ATI driver? After correcting this it will sleep.

That sounds identical to my issue, yes it is a new install. How do I change it?

Go to control panel, device manager. Select display adapter and verify it is the correct driver. IE Nvidia, ATI, Intel or MS Standard VGA. If MS VGA you will need to find the correct driver. Windows update does a good job but if it is an old PC/Laptop then you may need to find the Vista driver that works for it.
