OKAY....

So I've run Avast scan at boot, and I ran MSERT (took about 10 hours to scan), ...............................
....................................

10 hrs? What have you got on your machine? Any empty space left at all on your
harddisk?

I've got plenty of free space.

About 8 of the 10 hours was spent on the Mac side of the hard drive (I'm running Bootcamp.) I have no idea why it took so long; there's only 14 GB of stuff on that partition.

Anyway, so far so good, although I haven't started up Firefox. Not sure I should...

Well, so far so good, and I've even started using Firefox again. Looks like Avast and MSERT together solved the problem.

I did run the ComboFix program above, but I forgot to save the log, and now I can't find it.

Yes. I've been using it for several days now without any problems.

In the end, it appears the solution was a matter of running numerous different programs, each of which caught something the others missed.

Thanks for all the help, everyone!

Thanks for letting us know! Please uninstall Combofix now, by clicking on the Start button and then select Run from the menu. This will open up the Run box.
Copy/Paste combofix /uninstall (Please note that there is a space between combofix and /uninstall), click on the OK button or Enter on your keyboard.
You can now delete the ComboFix.exe program from your computer :)
