unallocated???

backed up my files on a 250g HDD

reinstalled win7 on 500g HDD

During install, I ignored the 250 and partitioned the 500g HDD like I have done thousands of times before.

Then choise one of the partitions on the 500G HDD to install wnin7.

Install complete and win 7 is on the proper partition on the 500g HDD. I see the other 500g HDD partitions listed as D and E in the file manager.

However, I dont see the 250g HDD

looking in administrative tools~computer management I see the 250g HDD as unallocated.

Any ideas how i can fix this and get back my important needed files? (these were my backups)

The first thing I would try is a different operating system. You could try a WinPE disk, or a linux distro, even a dedicated recovery distro such as Parted Magic (older ones are free).

If that doesn't work I would try a prog such as Partition Magic's "Recover Partition" function, or Test Disk off a Dos recovery disk.

These presume that the data is still intact, but that the partition tables somehow got wiped. If that isn't the case the next step is data recovery.

scan for error was done on
this HDD Less then 3 months ago thru win7 found no errors.

I dont have a lot of petience for this. I posted a response and it took me back to the list of threads and i clicked mine and my response is NOT here!!!

So, I spend time typing it again.

Paul - I see both your posts. I still would attempt to recover the partition tables first, via a partition program or TestDisk. It's easiest, and if that's the extent of the problem the data will be sitting there waiting for you.

Even though you have done it ...Thousands ? of times before, why didn`t you unplug the other drives ?

Im reluctant to try anything that writes to this HDD. I might later, but at least for now, Im looking to get the info off the HDD w/o writing to it.

getdataback finds all my files, but I cant get them w/o paying. I will do that if i need to, but I think there must be free out there. Im going to bed now and will continue wed after I get home.
