Hi, I have a home built win7 home premium pc with a Gigabyte g55a-ud4p motherboard which has on board HD realtek sound. Ever since I built the pc the sounds of applications, internet, system sounds have all been the same. Trouble stated when my smart alec driver checker application said there was a new realtek sound driver, which I duly installed. The system sounds are now almost silent, and the sounds in my applications are also subdued. I have listed to music on youtube for ages and now some of the music now deafens you whilst others can hardly be heard. This is very different to what was the case. I then proceeded to replace the driver with the one on gigabytes web site, no change. Then I replaced the driver with the one that was the originally installed one from the cd that came with the motherboard. Same problem. Yes I have checked all the volume controls, and settings, in the realtek control panel, as well as windows speaker control.

What I have noticed is that when you update a realtek driver it wont complete until after an uninstall and reboot, and of course immediately upon rebooting windows says hey no driver, lets install the generic one. After that the realtek driver installs.

Sorry about the extended saga, but I have tried to give all info. Any help much appreciated.

It sounds like the output levels of various devices have been changed. Right-click on the loudspeaker icon in your system tray and check your volume levels;

Yes, I know you wrote that you checked everything, but something must be causing it, and to get a handle on the problem one has to start somewhere.

Troubleshooting audio devices can be a wearisome business.

Hi Mike, Yes everthing looks ok in there, the mixer is on max for both speakers and system sounds. The only changes ive just made in the volume control options is to tick the boxes for "all devices and default devices" Thanks for trying to help me with this issue, and Im sorry if this post is repeated, but it didnt appear to accept my first go?
