Unexpected Kernel Traps

Hi all,

I have a Dell Studio XPS 8100 that is little more than two months old. So far, it's run well with the exception of a few ATI driver-related crashes that have cropped up at random intervals (attributed to atikmdag.sys). I've since updated the drivers to the latest version, so I believe those crashes should have been taken care of; however, just two days ago, I began getting unexpected kernel trap BSODs that I don't recall having before. I've already gotten 3 BSODs in just over 24 hours, twice when I was away from the computer, once when I was in the middle of doing some digital painting (luckily I hadn't made any major changes to my work, so nothing was really lost). I've used BlueScreenView to check what the possible cause may be, but it only seems to point to ntoskrnl.exe, which I don't think is the real culprit. I also ran Memtest86+ overnight and it turned up no errors after 6 passes.

Right now, the computer appears stable, but I'm concerned that I might get another BSOD at any moment, since the crashes are hard to predict and I haven't been able to narrow down what the cause may be. I haven't made any changes to hardware since purchasing the PC, and the last software change I recall making was updating iTunes on the same day the crashes began... although again I'm not entirely sure or convinced that it's behind the problem.

I've attached a zip of the minidumps and my dxdiag info, and hope that someone may be able to analyze them for me. Any help would be appreciated. I'd really like to get back to working on this computer again without having to worry that something might go wrong. Thanks in advance for your help. :D

Really hate to bump this so soon, but I just got another BSOD, again an unexpected kernel mode trap. Anyone have an idea what could be causing this? I've never gotten daily crashes like this, and it's starting to get worrisome.

I also do not have ZoneAlarm installed, so that definitely isn't the problem.

I've gone ahead and uninstalled iTunes just in case, though I'm pretty sure that's not the cause, either. I might try installing SP1 as mentioned in the 'how to' forum and see if that works. Thanks in advance again for any help.

Lot's of Norton mentioned, please do this:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- uninstall the Norton from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of Norton using this free tool: KB Article Not Found
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's

Then see if there's further BSOD's.

If that doesn't fix things, then do this:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like. From my limited experimentation it makes the BSOD's come faster.
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

If that doesn't work, post back and we'll have to see about fixing the registry entry off-line:
Code:
Delete these registry keys (works in XP, Vista, Win7):
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\VerifyDrivers
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\VerifyDriverLevel

Sorry, I should have done that earlier. I was in a hurry when making my original post and completely overlooked that step. I've attached the file, but I don't think it included any of the above minidumps since I ran CCleaner after installing Windows 7 SP1, which seems to have solved the crashes for now. If it happens again, I'll go ahead and uninstall Norton.

Many thanks for the thorough response, usasma. I see that I have quite a few drivers to update, so that is something I will have to attend to. Really appreciate your help. Thanks again!

Other than that there's nothing to indicate the source of any issues (other than the stuff I mentioned previously).

To be honest, I don't know. All I have attached to the PC are a Wacom tablet, an external backup drive, and a KVM that joins a wireless mouse and keyboard to a Mac laptop. I've wondered if it's the KVM, but it didn't come with an installation CD, so I don't have any drivers for it.

... well, I just ran a quick test by uninstalling the unknown device and using the KVM switch. Upon switching back to the PC, I got a notification that Windows was trying to install drivers for a new USB device and failed. I guess it might be the KVM after all.

Found the drivers off the Iogear website and am installing them now. Hopefully this should help prevent/solve any future problems.

If so, then it's something built into the PC.
