Hey there,

So I recently did a custom install from vista to w7 pro 64-bit. I have updated all drivers and I have not had any problems except for one fairly big issue. Every time I leave my computer, I come back and it is turned off. I am assuming this problem happens during sleep or hibernate. When I turn my computer back on I receive the "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" error. The problem details are as follows:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48

The errors have to do with your video drivers or video card.
STOP 0x116: BSOD Index
STOP 0xEA: BSOD Index

Both can have hardware components - so if you've replaced your video drivers with fresh one's, then we're looking at hardware problems. Please visit the Toshiba website ( Toshiba Support - Homepage ) to check for BIOS updates that may affect this problem. The model number that you posted points to a generic model A305, but not the specific model number. Please look on the back of the laptop for a number that starts with A300-Sxxxx or A305-Sxxxx

If you haven't replaced your video drivers, try this procedure:

Driver Removal and Reinstallation
Please do the following:
- download a fresh copy of the latest Win7 version of the drivers from the ATI website ( Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD ) (NOT from Windows Update or from the Update driver function in Device Manager). Do not download the Catalyst Control Center - download the display driver only (lower down in the listing)
- uninstall the current version of the drivers from your system
- install the freshly downloaded version
- check to see if you have any further BSOD's

Here's a post that describes the STOP 0x116 errors: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/25912-bsod.html#post280172

Blow out the fan vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum cleaner as they can damage the system) and ensure that the fan is working.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, then I'd have to suggest sending it out for service (especially if it's still under warranty).

thanks for the detailed response. I have been working on this for quite some time now and still have not been able to solve the problem. It is definitely the video driver that is causing the problems. I verified this by uninstalling the ATI driver and let my computer run with a generic VGA driver. When I did this, my computer was not crashing. I have looked for a third party driver that works with my computer, yet still have not been able to find one. I called Toshiba support and after speaking with someone for about 20 minutes he told me to call ATI about a proper driver. Their website says for any driver related issues, call the computer manufacturer. Now im stuck going in circles and dont know what else to do.

Do you know of any other solution or a good third party driver that I can use? I am becoming very frustrated with the continuous crashing and my inability to find a working solution. Any other help you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot

I don't think that this is a driver issue, despite the results that you're seeing.
Have you checked the BIOS for updates?
Have you cleaned out the air vents with canned air?

If the Toshiba drivers don't work, then it's most likely a hardware issue - not a requirement for you to go hunting down different drivers.

What is most likely happening is that the generic video drivers don't use all of the video card's features. And the AMD/Toshiba drivers do use all of the features - and it's one of those features that's not working.

The laptop was designed to work with the drivers on the Toshiba website. If you've upgraded to Win7, then there should be drivers available if the laptop is Win7 compatible.

Please provide the exact model number of your Toshiba laptop (it's something like A300-S5690).
