Unexpected shutdown in win7

I hope I'm posting to the correct topic, but I installed win 7 over vista on my HP laptop. The program runs just fine but everytime I just shut the cover from the desktop, without putting it to sleep or shutting down completely, I most times - but not always - get a message when I open it again that says "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown". Sometimes a screen will come up asking if I want to start windows normally or in Safe Mode etc. If I dont do anything it'll start normally, but I usually just tell it to start normally.

Should I not just be closing the computer like that? Should I put it to sleep or something instead? It seems like if it's left for a long length of time it will automatically shut down.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Claudia
What are the power options you have? it seems it is set to turn off when you close the cover. It might be something that got messed because of the upgrade from Vista.
And welcome to the forums!

When I upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista, I had you problem as well. Every time I would close the lid, my computer would crash with a Blue Screen Error. Nasty!!! Any way, the only way I could fix it was by backing up all my data and doing a clean install. If you haven't already, use the built-in Backup and Restore. After you re-install Windows 7, you can restore all you files in just 2-3 clicks. It sure beats copy and pasting files the old way like I used to do it!

Trust me, even though it may seem drastic, doing a fresh install gets rid of a lot of quirks, and really boosts you speed.

I have never had that error happen since.

Good luck!
