"unexpected shutdown" message when computer did shut down properly

I turned on my Windows 7 machine for a short time yesterday evening. The computer was shut down correctly, yet I got an "unexpected shutdown" message when I logged on today. Anyone else ever experience this? If so, what could have been the cause?

Hi ixfd64,

Try this:

Start > Run > type "services.msc" (without quotes) > OK

[Or Start > in the search field type "services.msc" (without quotes) > click on the found services.msc]

In the Services Window look for "Device VM meta data export service", right-click on it > Properties > General

What is the Startup type ? Please note down so that you can revert back to that setting later, if need be.

With the drop-down arrow select Disabled > OK to disable the service. Close down all Windows.

Though this may take effect immediately, you may still get the improper shut down messages for two days which are delayed reports of past events.

So wait for the third , fourth day and check whether that message stops and report.

Users have reported that disabling that service has not affected the usage of their PC in anyway.

( This problem manifests mainly on ASUS, Alienware and HP machines.)

If in future you feel that disabling this service might be the cause of any problem that you may face in running any programs/games, revert the settings back to what it was. ( That is why I said note down the current startup type. :))

So let us have your report after three days.
