Hi all,

I am having a very strange and annoying problem. I see a dialog pop up saying there was an unhandled exception with other information, but before I can read it my PC shuts down.

Has anyone seen anything like this? How can I go about figuring out what is wrong and how to fix it? I have looked in the event logs and I have not seen anything that looks out of the ordinary.

TIA!

Sorry for the "bump" but this is killing me.

Any suggestions on how I can try to diagnose this? Any tools or anything?

No more bumps please.
When I have things going on with my computer that shouldn't be the first thing I
think of is a infection or something I just installed or added.
Look on the right side of the taskbar and see if their is anything new. DO NOT OPEN IT.
For infections two programs I would use.
1. MSE
2. Defender Off Line

Thanks for the reply!

My appologies for the bump. My thread got moved without my knowing it and when I could not find it in the forum where I had posted, I thought it had gotten buried.

There is nothing new in the system tray that I do not recognize. Unfortunately I can't narrow it down to something I may have installed just before the problem began because it has been going on for a long itme.

Since the unhandled exception dialog only appears for a VERY short time. (I can't even read the whole thing.) I did not see it for a long time after the problem began. The original symptom to me was that the PC was randomly shutting itself down.

I initially thought it was because of heat. (I discovered my rear case fan had died.) So I began running the PC with the side open and a large fan blowing directly on it. I also monitored my temperatures with speed fan and nothing seemed out of range.

After the problem ocntinued, I thought it might be GPU related. Because I have been doing heavy background computations on it. I have since stopped doing that and the problem continued.

I was finally sitting right in front of the PC and saw the exception dialog, so that is where I am today. (Should have probably included this in my original post, but htought it was a bit too long winded.)

Oh, as noted in my first post, I've looked through the event logs and found nothing that jumped out at me as being related to the crashing.

Calling it a crash may be a bit overstated, becasue the PC seems to get itself shut down in an orderly fashion. I am never prompted with the improper shutdown text (and subsequent boot choices) at startup.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have run McAfee antivurus and malware scans as well as Adaware (has been installed on the machine since before the problem started) afterward I also tried Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. All scans have been clean.

Uninstall ALL anti-anything on your computer.

Install MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials, link in my signature.

then carry out following. After completion let us know so that i can ask you to run a script to collect info generated by WDO and the running of WDO.

HOW TO USE MICROSOFT'S OFFLINE MALWARE REMOVER
Windows Defender Offline
· performs an offline scan of an infected PC to remove viruses, rootkits and other advanced malware.
· is a free standalone, bootable malware and virus remover from Microsoft.

Download Windows Defender Offline (about 785 kB)
You will have the choice of downloading the 32bit version (x86) or the 64 bit version (x64).
The link will help you determine whether you are running a 32 bit version or 64 bit version of Windows

NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 32 bit version using a 64 bit version of Windows
NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 64 bit version using a 32bit version of Windows.

You run the 32 bit version on a 32 bit version of Windows.
You run the 64 bit version on a 64 bit version of Windows.

The 32 bit download file name is: mssstool32.exe
The 64 bit download file name is: mssstool64.exe

For the curious, this program was originally name Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

INSTALLATION:
· Requires an Internet Connection.
· Insert 512 mB or larger USB stick into a usb port.
· Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe
· NEXT button
· Choose the option On a USB flash drive that is not password protected
· NEXT button
· NEXT button
.
The install program will:
· format the usb stick using the NTFS format.
· download less than 230 mB.
· name the USB stick WDO_Media32 or WDO_Media64
· use less than 300 mB.

How to UPDATE the Windows Defender Offline USB stick:
· reinsert the usb stick
· run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.
· the update will download less than 65 mB.

Since the malware database is sometimes updated several times in a day, always update before running.

PERFORM AN OFFLINE SCAN
Bootup your computer from the USB stick
Windows Defender Offline will automatically perform a quick scan.
After the quick scan finishes, Choose Full Scan
Select all of your drives

The initial, full scan can easily take several hours, but
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.

@karlsnooks I'm finally getting around to working on this. Is it ABSOLUTELY necessary for me to uninstall my McAfee to perform what you're asking? I would think that it would not get in the way since the tool you are recommending boots from the USB stick.

Thanks!

Here is the requested information.

I noticed in the scheduled tasks that there are several AdAware tasks, but I did uninstall AdAware. I also checked and the directory referenced does not exist. My immediate reaction is to just remove those items, but I'll wait until you look at things so that we can have a more systematic approach to this clean up. Also so that you can be on top of what I'm doing.

Thanks again!
