I have a new Dell Inspiron with win7 ultimate and am extremely frustrated!

Now my TurtleBeach video capture (USB) device and my HP PCS 500 scanner do not work. I am not able to find drivers so there goes another couple of hundred dollars to replace perfectly good hardware that worked fine in XP. Hopefully, I can fine some generic drivers that will support my older but very critical hardware.

I understand that you are angry and frustrated, computers are expensive and in this economy money is hard to come by. Allow me to assure you the members of this forum can correct the problems that you are having.

I am sure that I cannot fix everything, now, but just give us time with a few simple adjustments, you will enjoying the best OS, ever made.
First type device manager in the search (by start button). Then look for (I think yellow) warnings that drivers are not up to date. If you find any go to the web site and get the most current. If as you say they are not available, use Vista or you could use XP in compatibility mode.
Follow the instructions given at this forum. Questions or problems?, just come back and let us know. I can assure you the help that you will get here is more valuable than the paid services you can find elsewhere. All we ask is for a little patience.

If they don't work as standard, don't forget to try Compatibility mode.

As far as your scanner goes, you could try Vuescan from Hamrick if you can't find a driver, though the cost of the software/driver will be $40. However you could try the trial version first to see if it works. It may be better than replacing the scanner.

Whilst I can understand the the OPs frustration, the fault is not with Windows Seven, but with the device manufacturers themselves.

Don't forget that these companies release new products as well - and if they continue to support older tech, they won't sell as much new tech

Thanks to all who have offered help. While I do realize that older tech may not be upgraded to support the new OS, it is still frustrating that the hardware that was supported in XP is no longer working in 7u. I will follow your suggestions and try to install the devices thru XP compatibility or locate a generic driver.

I did update my hardware profile. It now includes details about my 'puter...

i found this in some forum....not sure if it will help ya.

[FONT=comic sans ms,sans-serif]Go to the printers folder, Add Printer, Local printer, LPT1, then when the selection comes up click on "Windows Update". This will load the updated list of available drivers. Be patient, it can take a few minutes. Once the list is updated you will find the HP PSC 500 listed under HP (not Hewlett-Packard) in the printers list. You can then cancel the isntallation and just plug in the USB cable to have the plug-n-play automatically install. [/FONT]

Sorry to hear you have problems, but checking for critical drivers before upgrading is a smart thing to do. Hope you have luck with Vista drivers.

don't spend extra money
just run these in a Windows XP Virtual Machine.

We can't always expect new OS'es to support old hardware -- otherwise we would still be usung 80 byte column punched cards and 7 bit paper tape devices.

Don't however throw away good hardware if it still works and is fit for puropose.

I'm still using an HP Plotter and Blue print drwaing devices on a Windows XP virtual machine.

i have a few turtle beach products and the vista or xp drivers will work if you use compatibility mode- however, you will need to download the driver for the correct bitrate, 32 or 64. I own a computer shop in the midwest. I have not found anything that will not run in windows 7 as long as you either "run as administrator" or use compatibility mode. both of these are found on the right click dialog. i would however recommend the vista drivers. the other thing to remember is that video capture devices are ram and cpu hungry, very needy things. it would be out of good practice to bring up task manager and watch whats happening as you plug in the device to see what may be taxing the system to death while trying to run.

another thing to remember- if this is a "green" or low power system, it may not have the horsepower to get it done. this is no fault of the operating system. i recently had a acer 5810 tz in my shop that is a slimline low power, low battery consumption unit that would not run any kind of video capture devices because of its cpu power (intel 1.3 ghz atom) even with 4 gig of ram. the owner put it up for sale the next day. theres food for thought.

edit; if you are well versed enough to run virtual machine, then it may be an option for you, and thanks jimbo i might add, its been a while since i heard of anyone talking about a paper tape system. that was the 70's for me.

2nd edit- as for the scanner- go into/control panel/ programs and features/ and look to make sure windows fax and scan is turned on. the driver should already be in 7 for that device.
