My cable modem is a Hitron CGN2-ROG and my switch is a D-Link DES 108. I also got a D-Link DIR-820L router and they are connected like so

Modem(Hitron)>Router(Dlink DIR)>Switch(DES108), wifi is fine but when i connect to the switch i get unidentified network. Also with my ISP I only recieve 1 IP address.

Hi from Sevenforums,

You have sticky Dynamic more than likely that is why you only get 1 IP Address.

Can you put the ethernet cable in the Lan port of the router which the Dlink DES108 has been plugged into.

Unplug theDES108 from the router Lan port Please and plug directly an ethernet cable from your Laptop into the router Lan port.

Can i see an ipconfig /all from the computer in question?

Also does this happen to that machine or all machines on the network.

It happens to any machine that is connected through ethernet from the switch or router but not from the modem.

Disable Ethernet Local connection please.

Then do an ipconfig /all from the computer.

It happens on all computers.

Do all computers have a TAP Windows Adapter v9?

I think it has something to do with the settings in the modem but im not too sure, cause its fine when i connect straight to the modem but when i go through the modem>router>switch something happens along the line

Have you configured your ISP connection details on your router, probably PPoE your ISP will have supplied them to you.

I just purchased this D-Link router today, as I had DSL internet last week and now have Cable internet. When I had the dsl modem it would connect to the switch and all my ethernet ports were working, since I switched to cable I was told I need a router in-between the cable modem and the switch. I have followed the instructions that come with the router but with all that I still cant receive a connection through ethernet. And the settings on my cable modem I haven't touched since I don't really want to mess things up

You would configure the WAN settings TO DHCP, Static or PPoE minmum what ever your ISP details are from your ISP that as I can ascertain you have not done and is thecause of no internet for all your devices.

First you would contact your ISP and get your connection details and input them into your WAN settings ok on the router.

The actual problem is that the Hitron CGN2-ROG isn't just a modem, it's a modem/router and has DHCP functionality.

You don't actually need to use secondary router in this case unless you want to use it as a switch or access point, in either case you would need to turn off DHCP on D-Link router, then plug into the Hitron's LAN port, it will eventually pick up an IP in the correct subnet from the Hitron at which point you can use the D-Link router as a wireless access point or a wired switch.

Just look at the App diagram in the link below, you can clearly see that the Hitron is a modem/router as it's supplying IP's to everything in the network yet there is no other router showing up.

Thank you for pointing that out chev65. I didn't look at the hitron.

As chev65 pointed out you don't need a second router apologies i didn't investigate that.

If you do need a second router set to Automatic DHCP.

This is the first thing I look for anymore as Windows has no such problems with machines seeing each other on a properly configured network. Unless of course the time/date settings are out of sync.

It's becoming a big problem with the ISP's handing these combo units to everyone and then not mentioning they are using a modem/router not just a modem which completely changes the network set up requirements.

You would need to turn off DHCP on the secondary router although the Op was misinformed about the secondary router requirement, it's not needed in this case unless they need another wireless access point or another wired switch at some point in the network.

This thread is now solved despite the fact that the OP may not know it yet. ;)

I normally look at those things i think i had a tiring day.

If they were doing a LAN to LAN port not if they doing it via WAN.

SO i do not need the dlink router? I can connect my hitron straight to my dlink switch and disable dhcp on the hitron and everything should work?

Edit: Looks like i will have to use the dlink router because i put my hitron to bridged mode and now i cant access it.

You need the Hitron because of it's modem functionality. If you use the D-link you would need a stand alone modem.

The previous advice from the ISP was incorrect. There is no 2nd router required here at all.

The Hitron should work in bridged mode but only if the D-link has DHCP enabled because bridged mode bypasses the DHCP/gateway on the Hitron.

If the Hitron is stuck in bridged mode then perform a 30 30 30 reset to return it to default settings.

The ISP has opened quite a can of worms here and for no apparent reason.
