Unidentified Network - No Internet Access

I've read multiple posts about this problem but no concrete solutions. My problem is a bit different than the usual usecase.

Win 7 64 bit
Asus p5k se (integrated NIC)

Everything was working fine (a couple of months) until today. The only thing I did was trying to install some extra memory into my machine. That failed (but is a subject for another post). Problem started happening after that, but I find it hard to believe that it the two things have a direct connection.

In my case, the NIC manages to get an ip from the router (this is a direct cable connection, not wireless) and the gateway address is correct. However I still get the Unidentified Network - No Internet Access error. I'll clarify that the IP and gateway info appears on the Details screen of the network adapter. The main status screen shows (among other things):

IP4 connectivity : No Internet Access

I cannot ping my router. It's as if the negotiation phase between the computer and the router goes fine and then nothing. Looking at the DHCP table in my router I can see that my machine appearing there with a 192.168.1.2 IP.

I tried all the usual solutions:

Uninstall driver and reinstall
no DHCP
turn off computer
power off and take out cable
disable and enable adapter

I also saw that some software named bonjoure is blamed for a similar problem but I don't have that installed.

Any ideas are more than welcomed.

Have you tried clearing the cmos? That will usually get that NIC back in these types of cases.

Do you mean taking out the battery? I haven't yet. Anyway, it is not that the NIC is not there it's just that windows 7 seems to have some problems with it. Any ideas how to test it in order to rule out a hardware problem?

believe it or not the failed RAM install could be the reason your onboard nic is having it's issues, lol. reset CMOS battery like chev said.

.....i think i may of had this EXACT problem yesterday.....:p

do you have 2 Ethernet ports on your machine..??, if so just stick the cable in the other port, see if that solves it :)

There is a button or a three pin connector with a plastic change over on your board for this. You can look up the procedure but it's mostly common sense. It's really easy to find pictures of this procedure and you can also look up the exact location of the cmos button on your board fairly easily.

Removing the battery will also work but no matter how you do it you will need to reset the bios time and other important settings must be returned to how they were.

I'v seen this fix your type of problem on many occasion.

I reset the cmos but the problem is still there.

BTW today was the second day I tried to install the extra ram. I had no problem trying yesterday (as in installing ram didn't cause this weired NIC behavior)

In that case why not attempt to reinstall the NIC drivers if you have them handy. You can also try going into Device Manager and update the drivers or roll back and see if that changes anything. If that doesn't work you can also try using a PCI-e NIC card in case your onboard died or something.

have you reset the router by chance? Maybe it is where your internet problem is. If you have a second computer and that is working fine, then we know that portion of the connection is working. :)

problem solved!

I feel so happy right now (I am sure you know the feeling after tinkering for several hours). The solution was to change the MAC address of the NIC.

If you have any idea as to why this is the solution or what is it exactly that caused the problem in the first place i'd be very happy to know. BTW the NIC already had a legitimate MAC address, not something like 000000000000.

Perhaps messing with the memory somehow corrupted your MAC address, or at least changed it somehow to an invalid one. Usually a router reset or modem cycle will fix that also. In any event I'm glad your online again. ;)

I would think that reinstalling the NIC drivers or rolling the driver back and forth would have fixed that sorta problem also but maybe not.
