Unidentified network win 7 x64

Hello

I have an "unidentified network" annoyance going on, after trawling through millions of forums and trying all sorts of stuff, i've ended up here....Please help and please also go easy - i'm not computer savvy!

ok in a nut-shell:

• Have laptop (win 7, ver 6.1, Build 7600, x64) with sky wireless modem all working fine.
• Brought "sitecom range extender" and although signal received, said unidentified network and therefore no connection.
• At this point figurered it was the fault of the range extender, but then finally got sitecom working (security was inputted wrong) and all ok....
• .....until i restarted and the problem was back again.
• At this point the same problem occurred with normal sky network as well - which i can solve by disabling my "Broadcom netlink gigibite ethernet" - ????? But this didn't solve the sitecom...
• Then read about "bonjour" and disabled and sitecom worked....
• ....restarted and same problem.....

I just can't seem to find the solution in all these permautations and just find myself trying all sorts of odd things in different orders, and as it "sometimes" works i know the answer is there somewhere.....

Also, the IP, subnet and dafault gateway for sky and sitecom are the same when i do IPconfig so think that's ok.....

Anyway in a word - HELP!

Hi All.
Same with robpart here.
Also digging on a lot of forums, no answer for my problems.

Don't have bonjour service.

I'm using Windows 7 x64 both on my laptop and my pc.
Workgroup name settings also same, default one, WORKGROUP.
No router or modem involved here.
Plainly, I just wanna set connection (direct connection) using my Cat 5e cable.
And share from PC to Laptop and vice versa, using homegroup (at least, that's my plan).

I've set my laptop wired card to : 192.168.20.11 and my pc wired card (onboard) to : 192.168.20.2

Manual sharing (by manual sharing folder + mapping network drive) works fine. Even after reboot. Pinging always work. After reboot also.

But when it comes to homegroup, or network name, it makes no sense at all.

It said "Unidentified network", both on my pc and my laptop. Although, they could communicate very well.
Now, what I don't understand, why still "Unidentified network" ?

Second, when my PC just created a homegroup, and do some sharing stuff (my custom libraries CAN'T be shared),
then my notebook join this homegroup, everything run fine.

The problem kicks in again, after my PC or my LAPTOP restart.
Homegroup connections become lost.
I've to leave homegroup and rejoin. Or, just change again my "Unidentifed network" become home network. Default always public. I just can't find a way how to set my "Unidentified network" as home network permanently. Is it because this "Unidentified network" silly things ?

How to make my wired connection into something NOT "Unidentified network" ?

Is this a BUG in Windows 7 ? If it is, when it's fixed ? Is it already on W7-SP1 ?

Mylanox, I've been dealing with a similar problem as yours and I'm not an expert, but this is sure: the "Unidentified Network" in Win7 is not a problem to work with a Local Area Network. After several days of diving tens of forums I arrived to this conclusion. In fact I'm working now properly with my net (of course I've had to solve several other problems). I don't know if yours is a similar case as you talk about conecting the laptop directly, I suppose this means without an Ethernet or things like that... And at last a question: are both computers running Win 7 or one of them runs Win XP?

@Mylanox, please start your own thread, you'll get better help, and it doesn't confuse the issue trying to deal with 2 issues at once.

robpart, your Ipconfig looks good, nothing strange there.

Couple of standard questions:
1) have you disabled DCHP in the sitecom? I'm assuming yes, as it's giving the default gateway correctly, but I'd like to just check.
2) What is the IP address of the sitecom? Is it outside the DCHP pool?
3) Is the sitecom and the Sky router broadcasting on the same SSID/WPA credentials?
4) What happens if you connect wired to the extender?

I would suggest you run through this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91791-multi-router-network-configure.html with the sitecom range extender being the "switch" in this scenario. (Generally they are very much like routers, they just aren't designed to be the gateway).

Also just substitute the IP range I use (192.168.1.x) for your own IP range (192.168.0.x) if you want, shouldn't make any difference.

IP is 192.168.0.234
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Default G 192.168.0.1
i'm afraid i don't know how to check if its outside the DCHP pool - i note this is an important point in the link you sent which i'm trying - to be honest i haven't got past the first step yet as i can't work out the username and password to log into the Sky modem! - How can i check the DCHP range before embarking on the changing all the settings...?
3) Is the sitecom and the Sky router broadcasting on the same SSID/WPA credentials? Certainly the security is identical, and the SSID is "sitecom" and "sky44036" - i assumed all fine as have connected a couple of times..
4) What happens if you connect wired to the extender? Same prob

The DCHP pool will be in the Sky Router, usually within the "LAN" or "Home Network" settings.

Most routers have the default name and password written on them somewhere, usually underneath or on the back, assuming you haven't changed the password.

If you can post the make/model I may be able to find it for you

One thing I forgot to mention: In your case, you don't need to disconnect the extender from the router, as you have already disabled DCHP that will just cause you more problems.

Ok, i got into the sky and found that the pool is 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254

So am i following the tutorial correctly to assume that if i change the IP of sitecom to 192.168.0.255 and SSID to same as Sky, we may be there....?

I would recommend changing the DCHP pool to 192.168.0.2-192.168.0.252 and the Sitecom's IP to 192.168.1.253

Don't ask me why, but for some reason I find that IPv4 doesn't like it very much if you use 192.168.x.254+

And yes, set the SSID and the WPA security to the same as the sky, and hopefully that will sort it.

Same problem too

I have a wireless Router connecting a laptop Win 7 32 bit and a desktop Win 64 bit in a HomeGroup. All working well. Today sister having troubles with her internet asks me for help and brings lappy around. I plug the ethernet cable from desktop into her laptop- no net. I reconnect ethernet cable back and connect her lappy to my HomeGroup via wireless. Her computer works so must be her modem/router settings so send her off to contact her ISP.

Tonight, I try to connect to the web and I get the same 'unidentified network' crap as on this thread. No connection to router. Tried many times to reset from 'public' to home network. No can do. Can't get HomeGroup password to 'stick'. Tearing my hair out.

Only way to 'reset' my settings was to put a spare wireless PCI card in the desktop and use Restore to roll back to a few days ago when I last did a Restore Point. Only then did it give me a message that a HomeGroup exists and did I want to connect to it. I punch in the password and all is well again. Connect ethernet and it still works.

The home group is fine it seems if all parts are kept plugged in. Win 7 seems to cause an infinite loop situation fault in 64 bit that won't find the network or accept the password. No need for IP address etc. Thank heavens for backups.

sorry it's been a while - just found the time to try out the new plan....

which seemed to work....on and off (!)

interestingly, after i'd chnaged the dchp pool in sky, i could connect to the sky through the sitecom via ethernet (this was a new revelation).....therefore wondered if it was to do with the pool at all as i hadn't yet changed IP of sitecom?

when i restarted however it was gone. so then changed the IP address as you suggested for the sitecom and SSID to same as sky....and it worked!........

......for a while!

the problem seems to always be when i restart....so

question, now that both sky and sitecom have the same name, how do i work out which one is connected, because at the moment it seems to connect to sky if i'm near to the wireless, and when i go to the other side of the house it changes to sitecom and doesn't work, but if i knew it wasn't connected to sitecom in the first place i wouldn't have to keep legging in around the house!

anyhoo, attached is IPconfig again - first one is when not working, second when is....
