Unidentified Network

Hi, I was working on my cousin's PC and I had to test the ram. I put my cousin's ram in my fathers PC, tested it, put his ram back in, and now his Internet won't work. It says that I have an unidentified network and that it has no internet connection. I tried updating the adapter driver, resetting winsock and netsh, a static ip, whith is what it had to begin with, and auto ip. I'm on my iPod so I will post the ipconfig later from a differen't pc. I tried restoring to two days ago when it was working fine, that however didn't work either. The pc is connected through Ethernet to a wireless router and then to a modem. I have tried resetting both and factory resetting the router. It is a netgear WGR614 v9 the firmware is up to date and it was working fine for months. I have disabled the firewall as well. Still this problem persists, I would like to avoid reformatting if possible. Oh and I tried ubuntu, I ran it off the CD, and the Internet works just fine. It connect just as it should. So the cable and router should be fine.

Hello Kirby.

The ipconfig looks messed up for certain. The default gateway isn't there at all and it looks like the IP is coming from the modem instead of the router?

We should be seeing something like 192.168.X.X for the default gateway and IP. And the DNS is all messed up for some reason. The default gateway for your router should be 192.168.1.1 and the DNS usually shows up as the same unless you changed it in the IPv4 properties.

Is this with the machine plugged directly into the modem or is this plugged into the router?

Maybe it would be best to set the router to use DHCP for now?

If the machines files are messed up perhaps running the sfc /scannow command can fix that for you.

Since you were messing with RAM in this machine, I would remove them and put them back, swapping sockets.

I believe the IPv4 Address: 169.254.124.140 is what windows defaults too when it can't get an IP address via DHCP. Also the Subnet mask is wrong, it should be 255.255.255.0. A couple of commands to try are:
ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew, ipconfig/? will show you all the options.
If you go to the network and sharing center you could try the "set up a new connection or network" or "connect to a network" wizzard. Maybe even the "trouble shoot problems" at the bottom. Also there is a diagnose button if you click on the blue Local Area Connection.
What values did you enter for ip address, Subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS when you setup the static IP?

Well the pc Is plugged into the router. I had it set as a static ip and now it's on automatic. I have tried to manually set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 but for some reason it didn't work. I tried setting the ip address as well. I also tried swapping the ram around. It's my dads pc and I can only go down on the weekends because of work so bear with me. I won't be able to do anything to it till saturday. Thanks for the posts though.

As it stands nothing in the ipconfig indicates that it came from the router so the router isn't connecting or working properly for some reason. Can other machines connect to this router? Have you gone into the IPv4 properties and made sure it's set to use DHCP?

Either that or the board is messed up from the memory swapping and needs the cmos cleared.

I was going to suggest swapping network cables and plugging directly into the modem but I see you say ubuntu worked OK so it must be a windows thing. Go into device manager and delete/uninstall the network adapter and reboot. Then see what happens when windows reinstalls it.
