Unidentified Public Network & Invalid IP Address

Can you show us ipconfig /all from one of the machines that is connecting to the internet? And tell us what settings you used when you manually configured the ip address? Looks like a hardware problem... you said you tried different cables and routers and ports on the router? Right?

Same problem

I have the same problem. Two computers, just installed windows 7 on both. Both are hooked into the same router (Buffalo Airstation Wireless-G). I'm using Avast Antivirus instead of Norton. One computer (the workstation) has internet and full networking capability. The second computer (the Pavilion), has no internet connectivity and says it is connected to an unidentified network. When I tell it to view the full network map, it comes up perfectly, but it won't let me access the workstation (although the workstation can access the pavilion). When I troubleshoot it tells me there is an invalid IP address. I've tried putting them both in homegroup and I've put them both in "work" group and it doesn't make a difference. I tried disabling IPV6 as well, but it didn't help. So I unplugged everything from the router. Restarted the router and plugged just the pavilion in. The internet worked perfectly, the network worked perfectly. I put the workstation back into the loop. Now the Pavilion is perfect, and the workstation has all of the issues the pavilion had previously. Unplug it all, and reconnect with the workstation in first, an now the workstation is perfect and the pavilion is messed up again. So this leads me to believe that it is not a hardware error. There must be a setting somewhere that is messed up, but I don't have the computer expertise to know how to fix it. Help please!

It sounds like your router isn't quite right for Windows 7 to work with it. You can try the MAC clone setting if you have it. It is difficult to say exactly what the problem is with your routers DHCP assignments but doing this might help.

1) Turn off the modem (Unplug it)
2) Then take the router and reset it by holding down the reset button for 30 seconds.
3) Then open the control page (Internet browser, type in 192.168.1.1, the login and password are set as a default Login: admin Password: admin)
4) Once inside click the MAC Address Clone tab under Setup, enable it then save settings, then switch back to the Basic Setup under Setup. Make sure you are set for Automatic Configuration - DHCP, then change the Local IP Address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 save your settings then close the page.
5) Now turn off the router (unplug it) and turn off the pc (shutdown then unplug it).
6) Your modem should still be off if you forgot to turn it off unplug it and wait 60 seconds, then plug the modem back in, wait till it is completely on and ready to go.
7) Then turn on the router (plug it back in) wait 10 seconds.
8) Then reboot the computer (plug in the power supply and press power on).

If that doesn't work try this next.

check for windows updates for your NIC. if you find an update installed around the same time as your "internet problem" started, you might want to uninstall it. IpV6 can cause problems as well.

I have checked event viewer and i have noticed these messages.
