Unidentified (public) network - no internet access

Hi all,

I am trying to create a network between my laptop and ps3 using an ethernet cable. I have checked the box to allow sharing of the internet through the laptops connection, however, the LAN continually states “unidentifed (public) network, no internet access”. My internet is a wireless connection, using a usb key/dongle.

I have read many threads and tried a few things but without luck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (but please in lay mans terms as computers are not my strong point). Cheers.

Using the tutorial below and substituting your DNS and routers IP's might work. I can't test this out here but the tutorial in the link below covers the process pretty well.

Thanks for your advice.

I followed the tutorial, with all going well until I had to enter the properties for Internet Protocol Version 4. Whenever I entered them and closed the window, I found when re-opening, the IP address and subnet mask had been erased. When looking at the properties of the ethernet, I noticed that there was an anutoconfiguration IP address (detailed below). Viewing other threads, I understand it's an automatic ip that the computer assigns assigns to itself when it has no response from dhcp. How do I go about disabling the autocongiuration setting so as to enter the correct ip address? Cheers

You would have to force IPsettings.

This is basically the same in Windows 7.. but this is Vista.

Make sure you know your routers Gateway and DNS servers for your internet.
