uninstalling acrobat kills word 2003 > 2007 document conversion

ok - so i'm finally trying to update my acrobat from 9 to 10, so that i could get the thumbnailed resort of images.

but - after uninstall of acrobat 9, opening docx with the converter stops working. error message is something like "error opening document." e.g. no help there. and "repair office" fails to complete, saying a file "cannot be registered." don't have the exact file name available.

and i've now tried this twice. first time i proceeded to put acrobat 10 on before realizing that my system was crippled, and had to restore a clone.

yes, i prefer word 2003 to all later versions, it's the last one to have a user interface... no ribbons here, thank you.

anyone else see something like this? pointers?

Would you consider using Foxit Reader or Sumatra as your pdf readers? They don't have the security problems of Acrobat, load much faster, and don't patch security holes every 6 months. You can open doc and .docx in Open Office or LibreOffice, both free suites. There are also numerous converter sites online:

The version of Acrobat Reader on my computer is version 15, which I think is the latest version.

Perhaps you could try uninstalling version 9 & installing version 15, rather than version 10.

the problem is that mere uninstall of acrobat 9 already destroys word.

i doubt that installation of acro15 would fix it. and i need the professional version of acrobat to generate .pdf not just read them.

no, i cannot consider alternatives to these industry standard programs. and i need a PDF writer, not reader. acr9 is good, but it doesn't have a re-arrangeable thumbnail view of a document's pages. > 10 does.

I still use Office 2003 because it works the way I want it to. I also use Adobe Acrobat 10.1.2 Pro to convert a doc file to pdf. If you want it PM me? It also works on Windows 8 & 10.

still @ this. as it's already the uninstall of acr9 that damages word 2003, i'll next try to force acr10 install on top of acr9, and see what happens.

does anyone know what exact files/registry keys make acrobat think that it's already installed?

No its just a straight install no activation key needed. You have the option to uninstall any previous Adobe Reader which should be ticked as you only want one version installed to open a PDF file.

I've gone a completely different route for .PDF creation, which is free, (for basic usage, charges apply if you need lockable secure output), and legal and meets all Adobe PDF standards

pdfcreator installs as a Print driver and thus does not need to insert any links into the host applications used to create the contents of the PDF, and therefore works with any Word version, Or more than one concurrently, as well as other applications - they just need to be able to print.

All editing is performed in Word and then Printed to PDF when needed. The Printer Driver is also capable of "printing" to various graphics formats if you ever need this function ( good for inserting excerpts of documents into other documents.

This may be an option for you that is more reliable than using your preferred older word versions, and producing Thumbnail capable PDFs

i'm sure pdfcreator works for you great, barman58. i can't face the risk of unforeseen compatibility issues and need to stick with what most folks use.

acrobat is also a printer driver, but in its great wisdom adobe has (uselessly) made the installation to tamper with many other host-program features, thus making our life more difficult than it would have to be.
