MS will tolerate other browsers, but there still are a couple of cases where you MUST use IE.
I use Firefox and I find aggravating that sometimes I'm forced to use IE to get the job done.

There is no way to uninstall IE 8 anyway, best bet if you don't want to see it so often is to turn it off in programs and features - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5023-windows-features-turn-off.html

Turning windows features on/off is the closest thing you'll get to removing IE from your system. I'm happy cause I don't see it anymore, and windows is happy cause it's still there, I feel like it's a good compromise ^_^
