Uninterruptable Power Supply

Hello,

Was wondering if anyone might offer some thoughts and comments regarding these APC brand uniterruptable power supplies for a home PC.

Was thinking of getting one for my new PC which has specs stating that it
has a 350 Watt power supply.

Any experiences with them ?

Software supplied (for automatic PC shutdown before UPS battery runs out in a few minutes apparently) work well with W7 ?

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Since windows 98 I have been using APC products, saved me many times during storms and snow in southern ct. I am currently using APC RS900

Hello Bob,

APC is a great brand to have. I use a APC Back-UPS XS 1500 for line filtering of the power, limited battery backup, and surge protection.

Don't forget that these units are not meant to keep your system running whilst there is a power outage. They exist so that if such a situation occurs you can save all your open documents and files and then safely shutdown your PC.

I have a number of APC UPS units protecting an office in Russia, where spikes and power anomalies are much more prevalent than western Europe, and they have all worked reliably and smoothly.

The models used protect phone, DSL and mains cabling.

Just be careful if you plan to use the USB shutdown facility that it will work with Windows7 - I can only tell you that I would assume that it will prove to be the case.

Final word of advice. You need to have them earthed to a good ground wire for them to fully protect against power spikes and surges, otherwise they'll fail to fully protect your hardware.

I agree with all of the above comments. I run six servers at work all using APC ups equipment. Top notch stuff, and APC offer really good support. Just budget that you have to change them every so many years... after all they are batteries and they will need changing.

I'm using 4 APC UPS's on my important machines at home and I wouldn't have it any other way.
