Unique fan issue Dv7

Hi everyone !

I have an old Dv7 laptop and I know its known for heating issues but im facing a unique situation. Over the years I have never have any issue , only this week I have noticed it over heats. and on further observation I can see that the fan isnt running most of the time.

However If I tap the laptop's backside with my hand , fan just starts running as it should. I thought its some connection issue and opened it up but coulndt find anything. The fan isnt dirty aswell. Just wont run automatically....

Also on very very rare instances It starts itself aswell.

Is there something I can do myself with it OR just give up and take it to a repair guy ?

The fan's motor could be burning out (wearing out). Those symptoms are common when fans get old and start dying.

If you are mechanically inclined and are comfortable disassembling a laptop you could replace the fan (actually better to replace the entire cooling assembly) pretty easily.

If you are not comfortable doing this than a repair shop can do it in a couple of hours.

Had nearly the same problem with an old Fujitsu laptop -- sometimes the fan would run, sometimes not.

Fortunately, since these days, there's nearly always a video on YouTube for repairing stuff, I was able to find one that showed how to disassemble the laptop to replace the fan -- and the fan was only $30.

But be aware, there are lots of fragile ribbons and connectors in laptops that are easily broken, so you have to be very careful when disassembling and reassembling them.
