Still running the RC, and before I upgrade to the official version I want to figure this out.

So yesterday W7 started giving me this message again an Unknown device not working properly (under devices and printers).

Thing is the Drivers say that they are from kasperky (whose beta I'm using for my AV), but I fail to see how that is a device...

I only have 2 things connected; the wireless reciever for my keyboard/mouse which works perfectly fine, and my printer which is fine. So im wondering what this device even is... does anyone know how I could find out?

And it says USB for type (well it actually says universal serial bus controller)

Take a look in your device manager. On the unknown device, you should be able to look at the details tab. What is reported in the hardware id section?

Hahaha See... I tried that before. All it says is USB\UNKNOWN.

I would restart the computer and see if it comes up immediately, but I'm working on homework so I'll have to do that later.

EDIT: and I would like to point out that all my USB ports are working.

Software programs install device drivers to interact with your hardware - even though they don't have any devices of their own.

In particular low-level utilities such as antivirus', cd/dvd burning, and disk imaging programs will do this.

What happens when you right click on the unknown device and select "uninstall"?
Is the device recognized when you right click on the computer name in Device Manage and select "scan for hardware changes"?
What is the exact wording of the device ID in the Details tab when you select "Hardware ID" in the dropdown box?

I figured it was something like that. The exact working is USB\UNKNOWN

I had tried clicking scan for hardware changes - all it does it try to install the raid controller which I never got around to installing (since I decided not to do a RAID setup). Thats what All the devices do when I select scan for hardware changes, and its been like that since before this unknown device appeared.

And I considered unistalling it but I was afraid to. I'm going to right now though, I figure it can't hurt anything.

EDIT: and when I unistalled it, it unistalled just like anything else would. No problems there. Hopefully it does not come back.
