Unlocking user and Sleep problem

I am having a problem putting my Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit system into the sleep mode. It never gets there. I recover by moving the mouse and get the sign on
screen. I log in as the administrator with no password needed. It is now showing me
as being locked. I don't know why it is locked, don't know how to unlock it, and finally don't know if this is the reason for sleep function not working. For my version
of windows, I can only get to password maintenance thru the control panel. There is
no option there for unlocking. I tried to reset my password and that did nothing.

I see it now in the General Discussion group. I would suggest that if you move messages to other groups, you make it more obvious where they went.

You should be able to just click the login button and log back in.

The forum software leaves a link from the old section to the moved post, so I don't know how you missed that.

Thanks for the reply. I must have somehow missed the link to the moved location. I
will pay more attention next time.

I think you may have missed the point of my posting. I have no problem getting back
to Windows 7. My problem is that it never goes to sleep. After waiting for some time,
I just move my mouse and the signon screen appears.

The other problem (which may be related to the one I just mentioned) is that as
administrator, my account is showing a hold. I have no idea how it got there.
Earlier versions of Windows had access to screens allowing one to take these
holds off. My version of Windows 7 does not have that ability. All help screens
point to the user manager out of the control panel. There is no options there for
removing a hold. Microsoft has trimmed things down in Windows 7 to the point
where it is no longer fully functional.

Well, there are multiple issues with sleep on Windows 7. I have a similar issue with sleep, and no idea how to fix it. All I can say is that a BIOS update *might* be helpful.

About the password lock, does it work if you try to log in after sleeping?

I should not need a BIOS update, since I this is a recent problem. The sleep function
was working fine till now.

I think the PC is no longer going into sleep mode. Sign on is fine, but the admin id
remains locked and sleep is still not working.

I have a suspicion that there may be a pending reload request somewhere. I am all
caught up with the Windows Update, so that is not the reason. As a last resort, I will
reboot the machine to see if that helps. I am reluctant to do that since I loose much
information, including the Windows Explorer tabs. I have tried to save those using
export, but it doesn't work for me.

I finally bit the bullet and rebooted my machine. That seems to have solved the 'sleep' problem and my admin user is no
longer locked. I was not happy about having to reboot and lose all my tabs.

It is still a puzzle to me what caused locked the admin and why the Windows 7 would not go into sleep. I could have debugged it by removing certain programs one at a time and retesting. That would be a drag.

I think the Windows 7 program does not like to have too many windows open in Explorer 9. It starts to act erratic and
slow and bad things can happen. I have enought memory and disc space, so resources should not be the problem.

By the way, in earlier versions of Windows, one could export the tabs to the hard drive for subsequent retrieval with an
import after rebooting the PC. I can find no way to do this in my current Windows 7 32 bit Home Premium. Is this another improvement by Microsoft?

I was too quick to say the problem of sleep went away. It is back again, and I don't know why.

My admin user id is locked again, and I don't know what is causing that. I just can't
keep rebooting my machine!

It took a while, but I think I have identified the cause of my 'sleep' problem.

I should have taken a clue from the help about possible interference from USB's,
but a preliminary check in Device Manager did not indicate any problems.

This time, I removed a recently purchased USB 4 port extender and walla, the
problem went away. It was a Belden product. That company is the pits. I tried
twice to register on their site and would not be accepted. I'm just going to return
the item and make do with my existing USB ports. I suggest to never buy anything
from Belden.

You know what... that makes sense.
Glad you figured it out.

I know there have been a lot of problems with sleep, so I sort of figured it was just the OS.
