I have recovered and made playable most of the various format video files since deleting them from the bin.

However there is a number of MPGs that I am struggling with,so I wonder if anyone can suggest the best way to rectify and make payable in another format, say AVI. Please!

I use Freemake Video Converter to convert mpg to avi or wmv.

It's a free download here:

Freemake | Best Freeware Alternatives To Paid Video Software

Of course, it has to be able to open the files in question. If your mpg files are so corrupted that Freemake cannot open them, you may be out of luck.

There may be programs out there dedicated to repairing mpg files, rather than converting them---I have no idea.

Well the shark codec does, at least make the thumbnails pictures, but none of Digital Video Repair, Avidemux, VirtualDub, or Free will open the files. The only one that produces a reason is Virtual "MPEG Import Filter: invalid packat position 71:marker not set; possibly Mpeg-2 stream". I did download an add that, trusting it was the right one, should have solved any MPEG-2 problem, but it would not extract into the main program as zip file reported invalid.

EDIT: I had a look at the thumbnails enlarged and from the look of it they are low res sort of duplicates of various jpgs taken on holiday in Majorca. How those MPG came in to being :(

Sorry for time wasted and thanks for your patience.
