Unreal Tournament 2004 not starting up like it use to,

the Microsoft gameux.dll is stuck in an INFINITE LOOP appears to be the issue...

here is the cmdline I found using Process Explorer..


C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Windows\system32\gameux.dll,GameUXShim {46e9ad8e-5c50-48c3-ae7d-766d360e26c1};E:\_Shooters\Unreal Anthology\UT2004\System\UT2004.exe;processID


gameux.dll update legacy game data (infinite loop)







last time I played ut2004.exe without issues was almost a month ago...



so I have applied Windows updates, GFX and audio driver updates to my 2016 build... check my profile for system specs....



none of my other games are having an issue like this and I have never seen it try to load this gameux.dll shim before...




any advice anyone?

Hello Melchior,

How did you launch the game? Via a desktop shortcut or via the Games Explorer window?

standard desktop shortcut and even directly from the exe's folder...
target: "E:\_Shooters\Unreal Tournament 2004\System\UT2004.exe"


I scrapped my original DVD install and installed the GoG.com version... no good it didn't help...




I also Googled it and found some things but nothing that helped me out much...

Turn off game updates and downloading game information, which you can do via Group Policy.

Open gpedit,
In the Left Pane, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Game Explorer, then from the Right Pane:

Turn off game updates. select Enable then click OK.
Turn off downloading of game information, select Enable then click OK.

There is only a slight chance it will cure the problem, so it is worth a try.

thx for the info I gave it a try but no go...

I will reboot my system and see if that helps with this setting change..
it didn't work..
I tried loading Unreal Tournament 2004 on my laptop too same Windows 7 updates applied...
its doing the same thing with the gameux.dll...


its so strange it never happened before this month...

I found in another article.. renaming the exe works as a workaround...
so I appended a 't' to the exe name
"E:\_Shooters\Unreal Tournament 2004\System\UT2004t.exe"
and it works as a workaround...

BUT I had to append that 't' to the ini file too so it would work with it.. UT2004t.ini

note: the Unreal Tournament 2004 splash screen no longer shows up... for some reason..

If you re-name the file, then Games Explorer will not recognise it.

The Splash Screen is a .bmp file, possibly located in "Unreal Tournament 2004/Help".

ok the splash screen logo files are still there but not being loaded for some reason...


renaming the logo file worked...
