I know that this issue has been addressed many times on this site, but after some effort I haven't been able to find a fix that applies to my problem.

Symptoms:

- while shutting down manually (click 'shut down') system briefly says that it is "waiting for background programs to close" before shutting down (2-5 seconds). Even though there are no programs running.
- Then that message disappears, then appears and disappears again.
- All this without any user interaction
- On startup, all is well

BUT
- if left unattended, the system will put itself to sleep (despite the power settings) after a short time
-- or something resembling sleep; the power light remains on, but the system will not respond to input from the keyboard or mouse;
- after a hard shutdown and wakeup (hold power key for 5+ seconds) the BSOD appears

Message:
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
STOP: 0x9f
FIRST PARAMETER: 0x03

Your help would be greatly appreciated. I have attached the files generated by the debugger.

Is there a reason that no one has responded to my post - yet? Too busy? Or do you need something more from me?
FYI:
- I've d/l and installed all Windows updates
- I've reviewed many recent posts in this forum again, but found nothing that resolved my problem.

OK -- A lot running, surprisingly as far as I'm concerned --

I'm new here -- I have the screen shots, how to I paste them or send them to you?

Jack,

I think that I figured out how to do it a few hours ago. Did you receive the Word file that contained the (msconfig) screen shots? [I was surprised to see how much was running in the background, the only app that I had open at the time was the Chrome browser.]

Also, I uploaded the files generated by the debugger as an attachment to a previous post here.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Agreed, no problem. Let's take it from here.

Do you have what you need from me, or should I upload the attachments again?
If the latter, can I send the msconfig screen captures to you in a single Word file?

Yes that helps. Good job.

In my opinion you have way to many things that start with a boot.
They are all running in the background eating up your system resources. Any one of them can be causing problems.

One I notice first off was AVG Tuneup program.
Their is no such thing as a good Tuneup program for Windows 7. They all cause more problems than they worth.

Compare your pictures to my picture. Big difference.

I'm no BSOD expert but I think the information you added will help find your problem.

I will see if I can find one of our BSOD experts to continue with you and your problem.

They are always very busy so just hang in there.

Thanks Jack. We're moving forward now.

I did notice the big difference in what was running in the background on your system and mine. Another clue is that when I shut down Windows I get a series of notifications telling me that the system is waiting for a background program to close, one notification after the other with a pause between them, even though I have closed all the programs that were open. Eventually the system shuts down, sometimes with a BSOD, sometimes not.

Also. the system response time is noticeably slower than when I first set it up the PC a month ago.

These seem to be clues that all point in the same direction.

For now I'll follow your suggestion and disable AVG Tuneup. I'll wait for advice from one of your BSOD specialists before taking any further action. I'll take my place in line while hoping that my number comes up soon.

It is recommended to remove AVG PC Tuneup and the AVG toolbar.

All dumps point to the Intel LAN driver, check Dell for driver updates.

Thank you axe0 for coming to the aid of Al Lewis.

@Al
axe0 is one of our BSOD experts. Please follow his instructions.

Hopefully AVG Tuneup hasn't already caused damage.

I will sit back and watch.

Thank you very much.

1. I have disabled the AVG Tuneup process
2. I have updated the "Intel Ethernet Connection I219-V" driver -- I PRESUME THAT THAT IS THE DRIVER THAT YOU SUGGESTED WAS AT FAULT - Yes??
3. The Dell online support utility tells me that all my drivers are up to date.

Question: I don't see "AVG toolbar" in the list of startup/running processes. Is it there?

Jack

If you have time, would you care to suggest some startup or running processes that I can safely kill?

Thanks to both of you, I'll report back when I know whether or not the BSOD has been banished.

I can give you some guide lines of how I keep my systems.

Do not that when you uncheck things in msconfig/Startup you can still use them by just ticking on them or their icon. They just don't run in the background when they are not being used.

Suggestions:

1. No auto update anything. I do all my updates of everything manually. I check often everything to see if they need up dates. This way I get the updates I want and when I want them. This way if a problem arises I know exactly what I have done and check quickly fix things.

2. Start with just your active security programs checked. Examples in my case it is Malwarebytes Premium and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Then check and see how things work.

*** Please note:***

axe0 requested that you remove AVG Tuneup. He did not ask you to disable it.
Have you already used AVG to tune up your system?

I would suggest that you read axe0 post again and follow his suggestions and directions.
