Unscheduled Office Update caused crash and chkdsk utility to launch

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with Office Professional Plus 2016. Microsoft updated Office on 11/19/20. The update is not listed in Windows Update History but rather in Programs and Features. I never approved the installation of the Office Update. I can only assume that the Office update was bundled with a Windows Update.

After Office was updated, none of the office programs functioned (word, outlook, excel, power point wouldn’t open) and I was receiving a Chkdsk alert upon startup. The chkdsk utility would not run to completion during startup because “a software program was installed that was interfering with the utility running” to completion. I attempted to use system restore but the restore points were gone (I might have deleted the restore points but don’t remember). I tried running the Chkdsk utility from the Command Prompt for subsequent startup but the utility wouldn’t run to completion. I didn't want to delete the 11/19/20 Office installation since that would not only delete the update but uninstall the entire Office Suite thereby losing all data.

I finally repaired Office by using the repair utility from the Office Installation disk. Office now works but the chkdsk utility attempts to continue to run on startup. My understanding is that I can turn off the chkdsk utility running ‘chkntfs /x c:’ at the command prompt. However, I’m concerned that there is still something wrong with the system and turning off the chkdsk utility will only hide the problem and it may reappear or get worse later. Any opinion on how I should proceed?

Thanks in advance for your reply.
