Unsolicited tech support

Hi,

I just received a phone call from tech support at Jars Support telling me that there is a problem with my computer. They say they know because I have chosen the "send report" option after some problem. However, I never choose this option. They had me scroll through: My Computer --> Manage --> ? (I forget) and showed me that I have a lot of "errors", "warnings", and a few "criticals" and claimed that my computer is infected. They offered to sell me a service to repair my computer and also to renew my "software warranty".

This all seems very suspicious to me. But I don't know what to make of all of those errors, warnings, and criticals and, of course, if my computer is infected I want to fix it.

Any advice is appreciated.

Do not respond. Do not give them any information nor allow them to remotely access your computer.

Just hang up.

Typical scam. Dont get involved. If you want to know about infections.Use your anti virus full scan and updated
Download and run malwarebyte full scan and updated.
In addition right click on the bottom task bar go to task manager and go to process Look for any high unexplained CPU/memory usage.
If you want to really be sure post and we will get one of our experts. Between us, I thinkk that you are ok.

I was slow to figure it out and I did give out some information and allow remote access to my computer before hanging up and terminating the remote access. Is there anything else I need to do now?

Personal opinion only....
The only sure-fire way is to re-install , change e-mil address, change password.
You don't know what they had done when they remotely accessed your computer.

If your Win 7 is an OEM version ( it came pre-installed when you bought the computer ), you can use your recovery disc, if you had made one. Or, access to the built-in recovery partition.
Either way, you will lose all your files, installed programs etc etc. So you'll need to back them to an external hard drive before you proceed with the System Recovery.

If your Win 7 is a retail version, ( you bought the OS separately from a retail computer store), you have a box with an Installation disc and the product key.
Use the disc to do complete clean install.
Again, backup your files etc first.

I hope you did not store personal information in the computer, most importantly informtion about your financial institutes.
If yes, call your bank (s ) for a look out and see if you should change accounts and pin numbers. Talk to your bank officials.

Not trying to alarm you, but this matter could be serious. Remember..... identity theft.

I feel for you, man, I really do. I hope that they weren't able to get too much info from you.

I really despise the parasites that do this kind of thing. My sister nearly got burned a couple of months ago, until she remembered what I had told her. I have a little list of "safety rules" that I share with people.

1. Never let anyone that you don't know or trust have remote access to your PC.
2. Don't store bank information, or bank passwords on a PC. Even in a "Keysafe" program. They can be hacked.
3. Always use an AV program.
4. Never answer questions of a personal or financial nature when someone calls you. No one with good intentions will ever call to help fix your computer. Even if they do, if you use the program they're talking about, hang up and call the tech support line in the product's documentation. If there was a problem, tech support will know about it.
5. That applies to email too.

All the security in the world isn't 100% effective. My router gets hit between 5 and 10 times a day, and I know it doesn't stop everything, but that and a good AV program will help. A little caution and diligence goes a long way.

The tips that richc46 and t-4-2 gave are all spot on. It's great advice.

Spam-o-phone! Better check in msconfig/startup and see if there is some unknown program now running. Never ever click anything that pops up and says it is scanning your computer and it is infected. this in itself is either a virus or a way to get several dollars from you.

As was already said - disconnect from the web and reinstall asap. Change all passwords and start anew. What a scam, unbelievable.
