I have to admit to uncertainty as to how to approach this one - so I'm calling for assistance.

let me know if i should just restore windows. i have a backup .iso from about 2 months ago and i'm 80% sure that update was working at that time. i really do appreciate all the help. let me know, thanks.

That's probably going to be the easiest solution - but do SFC and CheckSUR scans before attempting any updates - post if they show problems and we'll try and deal with them before it gets worse.

well, i tried and unfortunately the issue is still there. it looks like the last successful update was august 1 when windows update agent was installed.

after restoring windows i ran the sfc /scannow and it completed. i then ran the checksur (KB947821). i still got the same error when running windows update.

now when i try the sfc /scannow, i get this again:

OK - I think I've corrected the registry corruptions that we know about....

I've uploaded a file - spsab.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

[COLOR=black][FONT=Segoe UI]IF EXIST C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS [/FONT][/COLOR][COLOR=black][FONT=Segoe UI]DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS\COMPONENTS.OLD1[/FONT][/COLOR]
 
[COLOR=black][FONT=Segoe UI]REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1[/FONT][/COLOR]
 
[COLOR=black][FONT=Segoe UI]COPY %userprofile%\desktop\wfire\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config[/FONT][/COLOR]
 
[COLOR=black][FONT=Segoe UI].[/FONT][/COLOR]

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions (if the REN command fails, try again while in Safe Mode.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

Now do a new Check for Updates, and attempt to install ONLY the oldest one found.

If it installs OK, try the rest
If it fails, post the C:\windows\windowsupdate.log file, and the error code and KBnumber

I have no idea why it should first say that it doesn't need the update, but then attempts to test applicability.

Have we tried a repair install yet?
