update from rc HELP

Hey,
I just bought windows 7 home premium and am trying to upgrade but it is saying that i will have to do a clean install. i have many document/music/video/picture files. will they be deleted? how can i prevent it if they will be deleted? i am really stressing right now

Hello Italirockmonkey, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can do a custom install instead to have everything in your current installation copied into the C:\Windows.old folder in your new installation. You can then copy your files back into the new installation, and delete the C:\Windows.old folder afterwards. You will still need to reinstall all programs though since it is still basically a clean install.

However, you should backup anything that you do not want to lose to a separate location to be safe though.

Just backup your own data to an external disk or larger USB stick. Where is the problem? There are chances you will find windows.old with your data once win7 is installed, but I would not rely on it.

Correct, but I would still recommend backing them up to a separate location to be safe. If something should go wrong (ex: power failure) during the custom install, you could lose everything that wasn't backed up.

Anything the system does "automatically" is risky. At the end of the day you can only rely on what you do yourself.
