Hi,
there seem to be a couple of posts about this already, but all seemed slightly different to mine.
i noticed that was an issue when i started my laptop this morning & had an error message for iTunes. I tried to check that out but Chrome wasn't starting up.
When i used IE to check, they said generally the error i got was due to windows updates failing, and sure enough i got one.
i've tried a few things from various bits of advice, starting in a clean boot, repairing my .NET (framework 4). I also tried the little FixIt program for updates.
nothing working.
I do have other errors in the update history, but this was the fisrt (17/09/11), and is still there. any advise please?

Hey JMH,
cheers for the reply.
I used the 2nd link you posted - hopefully they'll get in touch.
I came across the first page before & tried the 1st part (using the FixIt program) to no avail. I didn't try the 2nd bit though, it mentions up to .NET 3.5, but i have version 4.
I have tried to repair it, using Uninstall, then did uninstall & reinstall it - no fix still.
thanks again though

hi, thanks, still no luck, but here's the progress to date. Contacted Support & recieved a prompt & detailed response, It hasn't worked for me, so i sent a screenshot & error text back to them, but in case it helps anyone else, this was their advice:
This issue can be caused by the one of the following factors:

1. The Windows Update temporary folder is corrupted.
2. There are inconsistencies in the system resource.

Let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot this issue. I will help you to check this issue on Windows Update side and eliminate all possible causes on Windows Update side first. If we find this issue is caused by some system problems I will help you to involve our System Support to do a system check. Your understanding is highly appreciated.

NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the Windows Update site later. Please be sure to re-enable them after completing the update process.

Step 1: Rename the Windows Update temporary folders:
====================================
1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: notepad and press Enter.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:

net stop wuauserv
net stop CryptSvc
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sold.old
net start CryptSvc
net start wuauserv
pause

3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "rename.bat" as the file name and save it to the Desktop.
4. Return to the Desktop, right click the rename.bat file and choose "Run as administrator".
5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If not, please proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Run Microsoft Fix It Tool 50202 to reset Windows Update components
===================================================
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683

2. When the file download window appears, please click "Save", and follow the directions to save it to your computer.
3. Locate the downloaded file and double click it to run the tool.
4. Follow the steps in the wizard. When you are prompted, please click to check the box before the Aggressive option.
5. After it is finished, please restart the computer.

After that, please perform Windows Update to check if the issue is resolved

new update, but still no joy. The second part of the new email was something i'd seen (and tried) before, but i had another go.

Run System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)
=============================
1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow

3. Please restart the computer and recheck the original issue.

Manually download the update and install it in a clean boot mode
============================================
1. Please download the update from the following link:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2564958)
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27652

2. Click the Download button. When the file download window appears, please click "Save", and follow the directions to save it to your computer. Please remember its location.
3. Click the "Start" Button, type "msconfig" in the search bar and press Enter.

Note: Please click the Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

4. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
5. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
6. Restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System"
7. Double click the downloaded file to install the update.

Note 1: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later.

Note 2: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to Normal Mode after we get this issue resolved.

phedro,
Rhetorical comment only....What hope for we mere mortals when the " experts" take so long to correct a problem.

:) haha true. it does seem more complicated than i thought it was going to be - at least they're being helpful about it.
I reckon if i took the laptop in somewhere they'd get it sorted within half an hour, but i think MS are only giving me a couple of steps at a time so they don't confuse me :)
