Yesterday, fellow blogger and enthusiast Paul Thurrott revealed the European edition of build 7264, which, as you all probably know by now comes without Internet Explorer due to some antitrust lawsuits filed by the European Union against Microsoft. Since said lawsuits were filed, many on communities across the internet debated, or should I say flamed each other on this topic, some supporting Microsoft stating that they have the right to bundle in IE with their OS, and others stating that Microsoft is just taking advantage of their market dominance to have a monopoly over the browser market.
Whatever the case, many from both sides of the isle were curious as to how people will get a web browser on the OS. There was speculation that there will be a dialog box of some sort allowing people to download one out of a few of the most popular browsers out there, however, after we got our dirty hands on this build, we discovered that this isn’t the case. While OEMs may bundle in a browser (or several) of their choice in with the PCs that they ship with Windows 7 E, just how will people get IE on the copies of Windows 7 E that will be on store shelves?
CNET and Ars Technica have reported that Microsoft will distribute a feature pack, that may be given out in a few different ways, most prominently through Windows Update and CDs that come with the Windows 7 E package. After looking into this feature pack ourselves, we have found that the update name for this is KB968771.
We have managed to get our hands on said feature pack, and here are the screenshots of the installation experience on the Windows 7 E version of 7264:

Wow this is unbelievably stupid. So if your going to install IE through Windows Update, does it really hurt just to have it on your computer in the first place. Does 20 MB of disk space really hurt? Stupid EU. If people really wanted a different browser, they can always download. They didn't download which means they don't care about what browser they use or they like IE. Fail EU for listening to Fail Opera.

It is damn ridiculous...let me tell you one thing, for those who know me on here I run an IT Help Desk where we get all varieties of people seeking help everyday...When we set up their machines (format/reinstall) they expect to just get on the internet...no problem. No in the EU, same scenario. Computer is up and running...we give it to the user. user says"Umm...How do I connect to the Internet?" I say "Sorry but Microsoft wasn't able to include a browser in this version of Windows...EU regulation prevented it...". Now doesn't that sound pretty damn ridiculous? Really EU a separate download or "feature disks". No wonder people come to the USA all the time...its ****ing countries like yourself that make life ****ing inconvenient for your citizens due to your agenda that you feel that you have to ****ing complete.

For what it's worth i'm EU and like many would quite prefer to have IE8 bundled in. I use IE and i am happy with it, but if i wasn't i would still prefer for it to be bundled and then remove or install an alternative at my leisure.

I guess this is targetted to the people who perhaps would not know better and therefore would stay with the bundled app. However in reality it is exactly those people who will be stiched up like this as the more technical users will easily find a way to install, whether it be through an update or just having the installer on a USB stick.

Don't tar us all with the same brush! This is a stupid ruling. Is it going to cause major hassle... well no. In fact from reading what i have read on here it looks like we Europeans will benefit, as with pre-release copies we will be getting full versions rather than simply upgrades for the same cost as the upgrade. That suits me just fine ty :)

This IE issue has been going on for years and while i have never taken any notice of it i always thought it was down to other companies crying fowl and putting pressure on the EU and/or MS rather than just the EU being silly.
Could be wrong i guess but it always struck me as silly.
This is why i dont think that adding in IE later is dumb. MS are pleasing the EU by not selling W7 with IE built in yet straight away are providing it free.
And yes, im very happy to pay the pre order price.

"Sorry but Microsoft wasn't able to include a browser in this version of Windows...EU regulation prevented it...". Now doesn't that sound pretty damn ridiculous?

Yes...this sounds pretty stupid, but maybe there is a way to install IE just by running Windows Update. Maybe IE8 will appear as an optional update.
FFS, how would a new computer user, with no special knowledge, who only wants to browse the web will react when he sees that he can't . He has to spend time and maybe money to get someone to install on his brand new PC or Notebook an Internet Browser...

Buying a PC is a different matter. Im sure companies like Dell etc will put a browser on their PC's, its just people buying the OS that will have to find a way of getting on line. And if you can install a OS im sure you can figure how to put a web browser on.

Soooo......

1) Windows E (sans IE) install begins
2) Windows E runs Windows Update
3) Windows E asks user if they want to install KBxxxxxxxx
4) Average user says "Yes"
5) Windows E installs update KBxxxxxxxx
6) Windows completes remainder of installation
7) Windows is now installed with IE

This is the solution that cost tens (hundreds?) of millions of USDs and EUs

I won't argue the pros and cons, only that I wish the money had been donated to some worthier cause.

P.S. The Lawyers wish to thank everyone for their children's college fund.
